You folks will love what I did today! Story goes as follows...

I work as a part-time postal clerk while also working on my Law degree (I'm 25). Anyway, about 9AM this morning a 16-ish year-old comes in with a huge laptop in a box. He asks to send it to Niagara Falls. I'm filing the info out but the young'n is having some problems doing his part. I take a closer look at the loose paper he's using to read his information.

"N.I.G. City: Lagos."

I immediately ask him about the Niagara Falls bit, he's totally certain that's where it is going. I kindly tell him that N.I.G. stands for Nigeria and that Lagos is NOT in Niagara Falls (he didn't know much about cities, states, and the like). Anyway, a red flag goes off in my head and I ask him if he knows the person he's sending the laptop to. NOPE! Apparently he was using an online seller service (Craig's List??) and was contacted by the recipient's "bank" through e-mail (LAWLZ) telling him that the money would be sent once a tracking number had been received.

I informed the lad to NOT sell the item and keep it himself, and to give all the personal information gotten from the scammer to the police. He promised he would report the info to the police at his school this same day. I just saved this guy an $800 laptop plus shipping fees (would have been over $50).

Nice work! If only there were more attentive workers. Of course it was a bit of luck he came in and had trouble.

I would love to see where a brochure on 419 Scamming was handed out to anyone that shipped to the most notorious of 419 countries. I know that's just the tip of the iceberg but at least it's a beginning. Smile
