I have been sent details for a bank account from a lad, but how do I check that it is a valid account, before passing it on to our mutual friend and claiming my piggy?

EDIT: Incidentally it is a UK based account.

Post the details here and one of us will tell you if it looks valid.

I had a read on the forum and found the IBAN tools. According to those the IBAN is at least valid. The sort code also seems to match the bank, so I am pretty confident that it actually is real and I am going to send it off to you know who.

I might leave publicly posting the details until it has been with YKW for a few days, if that is OK, I don't want to compromise it in any way, but I really do appreciate you getting back to me.

EDIT: I have actually put together the email to YKW, and I have PMed rover to ask him to look over it for me. I won't add my piggy until I hear from rover that the email looks ok. Smile

Your precautions really aren't needed.The lad wouldn't send you account info to put money in unless it were valid.Send the info to Alan,and stick the pig in your sig line.Congratulations!

Thanks doc. That makes sense. I would ideally like somebody to look over the format of my email though, just to make sure it has what it needs.

When I send the email, does it matter which email account I send it from? Should I send it from the same account that I have been using to bait the lad?

^^I seem to recall reading somewhere not to use your real-life email address when sending the details. Since you are providing evidence, you don't want it tracing back to the real you. I have a generic account I that I use for eater correspondence and for sending account details. I suppose if your baiter email addy isn't some crazy or nasty name, you could send from your baiter account.

Another thing that I wondered about was how long international bank transfer take (so that I can a realistic delay to the lad).

I assume that I can say that the bank has told me at least 3 working days.

Yes 3 working days sounds right but then your house burns down and you have had problems getting back onto the net as you have been running around getting a place to live...... Twisted Evil

I always say three to five business days (sometimes seven). And send the transfer late in the week so the lad has to agonize over it on the weekend. For example, for one lad I sent the transfer on a Friday. He waited the following week for it, and on the following Friday it still wasn't there. I said it had been only six business days, so it would probably get there the following Monday or Tuesday. Got to use that extra weekend Smile

Go with the above.
A UK bank will take at least five working days. Which is a full week.
Make it seven and you can get a fortnight from it. Very Happy

^^Most definitely. Send it late in the week and you've got the weekends. Long weekends (holiday weekends) work great as well if the timing is right.

Thanks. I just want to make sure that I provide enough time for the account to be closed down (assuming it does get closed down) - so that I can then claim the transfer failed and hopefully get another account.

I have told the lad 5 days, and so I will maybe get in touch with him early the week after next.

That should give enough time to close the account down, I guess.

^^Don't forget--you can email him in a few days and say the transfer got bounced. Ask him confirm the bank numbers. Then it takes a few more additional days. And it gets bounced again. Then more than likely the lad will give you a new account to try.

You can stretch this out and get another piggy or two.

{edit: And you/we don't even know if that account will get killed. But definitely give it a few days. And then do the bouncing/rejection thing and have him confirm the account and and buy time}
