Hi, everybody!
I'm new to this. I got a scammer on the hook but I don't know how to reel him in.

It's like this. Recently I've been trying to sell a rather expensive item ($1000) on Craigslist and I got a response from some dude who wanted to buy and pay by check plus $300 over for shipping that I am supposed to send to his agent in another state and then the item would be picked up at my home.

I said sure, send me a check and when it clears and I have cash in hand I'll send the overage to said agent via Western Union.

Well, lo and behold a UPS truck pulled up this morning and delivered a check from a ligit looking business on the west coast in the amount of $2900! Almost three times my asking price. I was like wtf so I took it to my bank and they explained to me why it was fraudulent as compared to a legitimate check.

Now when I got home I look at my inbox and found this new message from the guy:
Quote:
SUBJECT:AWAITS THE WESTERN UNION DETAILS

HERE IS THE SHIPPER INFORMATION TO SEND THE REMAINING MONEY FOR THE PICK UP..

Receiver Name: Laverne Brown
Address: 28 colonia avenue
City; Danville
State; ILinois
Zip Code: 61832

And then get back to me with the western union transfer details below
as soon as you send the remaining money to the shipper through western
union.

1) senders name and address
2) total amount sent
3) m.t.c.n 10 digit#
Dont forget to deduct the western union cost.

Kindly get back to me and pick up time..

My question is: Now what?

Drop all contact with the scammer since he has your real information. Just don't respond to him.

Welcome to Eater. Very Happy We don't recommend baiting with any of your real information. There's very limited risk of any real physical harm to you, but scammers are lowlives who can make quite a nuisance of themselves so it's not worth exposing your real information.

Read up here about how to bait safely using all fake information and grab a new scammer to bait, we have tons, unfortunately.

yes, it's true that he has my mailing address but I'm not a bit worried as I will be moving from here next week. After that the house will be rehabbed and will not have any occupants for the next 3/4 months
I also already use a Gmail account for all non-personal Emails.
He does have my real name (not my full name) but that's not a big deal as both names are real common. Kinda like "Tom Jones".

You should still drop the bait. You'd be surprised what you can dig up on someone on the internet by stringing tidbits of information together in searches. As I said, it's not worth the risk just to mess with a scammer.
Save your fake checks as a souvenir and start over with a fake account and a new scammer. There really are tons of them out there to bait. Check the surplus forum here and email a bunch of the ones listed there. Soon you'll be buried in scammer replies.

I fully agree with Ima. Drop it straight away. Ignore all correspondence and drop him ASAP.

Despite you having a common name, and moving out soon, it's still not worth the risk.

Set yourself up a character, give them a Yahoo/Gmail/Hotmail address, and start wasting the sammer's time that way.
