From what I've read, the official word is "noone really knows". And the unofficial speculation is google's birthday has something to do with it, and 15 years ago LiveScript (now better known as JavaScript) was born. Since the logo is done with some pretty advanced JavaScript, some are eager to draw that connection.

Rumour has it that it's a demo of some HTML5 features.
(Whether it's a coincidence that Google's Chrome bowser handles it just fine while Firefox eats 100% CPU to display it is up to you to judge.)
