All our family that live in Christchurch and surrounding areas seem to be unscathed although there is a bit of damage to be sorted. Glad there has been no fatalities so far. Hope it remains like that.
Good old kiwi spirit will see Christchurch people 'bounce' back.

I lost a box of cereal off the shelf, other than that, nothing too exciting. Couple of cracks here and there in the wall and ground.

I should mention that I slept through it because things like this happen so often (just not as strong). It's what you get for living on a major fault line.

They are very lucky to have zero fatalities with that big of a quake in a huge city. I went through the Northridge quake in 1994, smaller than this one and it had 72 deaths. Hope they can rebuild soon.

I was in the Loma Prieta 1989 quake. I was only in first grade, but it is definitely a memory I'll have forever. I was outside watching the streets turn to rubber.

I am very relieved there were no fatalities, I guess all the 'low rise' building help. I hope the hostel we stayed at wasn't too damaged.

I fear for my favourite carpark in Christchurch, though I recently met someone from there who had never noticed it. Rolling Eyes

Hopefully it's given a lot of people here a wake-up call.

We straddle the edge of two or more plates and quakes are not uncommon (this was simply a "real" one). The North Island is liberally scattered with dormant (but not extinct) volcanoes plus a few active ones. Tsunami threats can't be discounted on the East coast. The infrastructure of Auckland and Wellington would turn to absolute shite in any major event - distribution and continuity of essential supplies wouldn't be possible. In other words I live in city that would be totally screwed had this quake happened here.

But due to the typical kiwi "she'll be right, pass the No.8 wire" mentality I'd say maybe 10% of the population at best can handle a rainy weekend in that lasts more than two days let alone a natural disaster. But being some kind of paranoid freak we do maintain a well stocked 'emergency cupboard' and even have a 'grab bag' should we need to get out in a hurry. Proof that I am very very weird indeed (and you haven't even seen my socks...)

I'm not being cynical when I say this, but if anything this major was to happen, Christchurch would be the one place with a chance to pull through without huge ongoing problems. Transport links are still up, so whatever is needed can get there. Far enough away from other major centers for them not to be affected but close enough for relief to come quickly. Sewerage is the only major problem they will face for a while.
