Making a short call and waiting lad to call back: Works?

I have some times got these phone numbers where I could give a call to get confirmation about "the money" and what not.

Have you tried out to call a short call to these numbers and hang up before lad answers?

Will they call usually back (costing them money)?

It's a coin-toss to me. I've called and done a hang-up after I've woken them up at 3:00 a.m. (their time), and sometimes they call right back. I always wait until they answer, though. Then I shout "hello" "hello" or something and hang up. Sometimes they call back. Or they call back the next day. But they leave very short messages on my voice mail, or if I answer they immediately tell me to call them back because they are almost out of credits and then they hang up.

I haven't found too many lads willing to call me and talk for 20 minutes. So I usually call them. It costs a little bit, but it's worth it to me.

It costs them money.
You pay for a national call but they need to pickup the tab beyond that.

After I have repeated "hello" three or four times, I usually get a high pitched "send email OK"
three or four times. Very Happy

^^^ It cost me almost $5.00 using Skype the other night to call my lad in Nigeria. About a 20 minute call. Are you saying my lad picked up part of the tab on his end?

Don't know about skype but your lad will pick up most of the cost on an international mobile call.
BTW, I Google "cheap international calls" before I call anywhere abroad.

The "bad line" call usually works quite well. A quick (less than a minute) call consisting of you yelling "Hello" and your character's name will usually result in a call back.

A money wasting (for the lad) tip is to allow his return call to tick over 60 seconds so the lad gets charged for 2 minutes then make the line "go bad" (I scrunch up paper near the mouthpiece and then hang up) and the lad will quite often call back. Then rinse and repeat until the lad runs out of credit mid-call Smile

The numbers listed there are test numbers for various phone companies. If you call them, you get a recorded message saying that the call can't connect (or something to that effect). The clever bit is that even though they think they aren't getting charged, apparently they are.

I've used them on a lot of lads before. When they complain that the number doesn't work, I just tell them that my friends have no trouble calling me. If they ask me to call them, I just say I couldn't get through.

I doubt that. Normally that's only the case when you're travelling abroad, and then receive calls on your mobile. (roaming services)

If you dial a Nigerian phone number, and the lad actually is in Nigeria, (not somewhere abroad) it won't cost him anything.

This sounds like a workable plan. Somehow I would like to come up with a trick to get them to use their money... Would it be unethical to trick them to call to a high cost number?

You can set up a UK 070 number for free, and it will redirect to any phone worldwide - they're upto 50p/min (say ~80c/min) to call, so don't. But if you can get a lad to call you back on one, go for it.

Problem is that some networks will not route international calls to 070 numbers because they have no way to bill back the caller at the premium rate.

That was easy. It was not quite clear though how much these numbers actually cost but (to call)... that's propably the trick how they get money.

Unfortunately my character has had a tongue cancer so she can't speak that well. It is sad... of course not as sad as being locked in to a refugee camp with 6.2 milloin dollars and no where to put it.

As long as you are in the UK, with a UK number, it's free for the receiving part.

I got me one of them O2 Your Country 3G sims. 50 free international minutes for the tenner top up. Makes things a little cheaper if you can't get the lad to make the call.

I actually enjoy calling them back. It's worth the ten or twenty bucks a month, at least to me.

I only call certain ones, but there is satisfaction on waking a lad up at 3:00 a.m. (his time) and talking with him. And then calling him back an hour later to say I forgot to wish him a good night.
