Thanks for posting that, Cowboy Buck. While romance scams have been around for a long time, we've seen a huge increase in the number of victims of this type of scam in which a romance scammer plays a US soldier. I'm familiar with the blog mentioned in the article, soldiersperspective. We've talked to some of the same victims as they have. The victim that Bluth interviewed for his radio show a couple of weeks ago was a victim of this type of scam.
We have an a very good informational topic at SWs, which was a collaborative effort by many support team members: http://www.scamwarners.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6528
This scam varies from the standard romance scams because the scammer often asks for money for a special satellite phone so that he and the victim can stay in touch. |

The ones who pretend they are soldiers really piss me off. And not just US soldiers but any country's military. If you put any of these assholes in a battle situation, they'd run in the opposite direction like the pieces of shit they are.
OK enough of my rant. |

^^I totally agree! I served eight years (peace time thankfully), but I'm a vet, and I hate it when someone pretends they served. |

What do you have to do to get chocolate, flowers and teddy bears from a scammer?
Although I'm really only interested in the chocolate. Yummy! |

This annoys the hell out of me. As a serving soldier it really pisses me off to see people pretend to be suffering from war, and giving the whole military sob story.
I've done 4 tours (Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Afghanistan), and I'll freely admit none of them were a picnic. But to then use this to scam generous, sympathetic people really grinds my gears. |
