I work with alot of people from Africa. Eritrea, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Sudan specifically. I've asked them all about 419 in their country and what they know about it. They all (17 different people) were aware of what it was just from the term 419. They all also said that it was mafia who ran it. The Nigerian guys were the only ones amongst the group who had the mentality of "africa should 419 the west for all the shit its done to us" kinda thing. These are all new immigrants to Canada, all 16 have been here less than 4 years.

also obviously i never mentioned i was involved in scambaiting or anything. i just played it off like 'i always get these damn emails, and i've heard the term 419. What do you guys know about this?'

That's how scammers justify their acts. They believe the West is responsible for their poverty and exploitation (which is partly correct for some cases). They also think that all Western folks are extremely rich and would not be hurt by getting ripped off a "few" bucks.

I would blame militias and wannabe dictators before blaming the West. They've had over a century to get their countries back together.

Nope, it's totally a cultural thing. It's not a race thing, after all scammers will happily steal from black families by email. It's not a 'The evil West' thing, we see loads of scammers chasing Asian victims. It's not a "payback for slavery" thing, slavery existed in Africa long before the white folks arrived. Those are all just excuses.

In my opinion, it's like rationalizing stealing old ladies' purses by saying that somebody of the same race stole your granny's purse 60 years ago. It's just a shoddy rationalization of a despicable crime.

Just because you ask Africans if they know about 419 doesn't mean you are racially profiling. In fact, I bet they were quite happy to talk about it.

clifford, could you go into more detail re: it's "Mafia" who run 419.

Not many people realise just how much the Africans were involved in the slave trade. Virtually all the Africans shipped to America were originally kidnapped by other Africans.

Either way, I wasn't involved in it, nor was anyone else alive today.

It was an accepted commercial activity then. Africans saw nothing wrong with selling people as slaves.
Europeans saw nothing wrong with buying them.
