I'm stoked, everyone! I finally got the 64 bit retail OS X kernel to run on my motherboard! Now I officially have a Mac Pro... without the effeminate white mouse and keyboard, or the need to ship it off to avoid breaking my warranty Very Happy

Tsk Tsk, serious breach of the EULA agreement there, plus you don't have to ship it off to retain your warranty and unless you are running Xeon CPU's you don't have a pro Wink

Every Mac owner (the ones with a little bit of sanity left) is dying to install Windoze 7 on his otherwise useless and overpriced piece of hardware. What's the point?

I'm still curious how you did it though. I'd like to try it, just for shits and giggles. Just to have a good laugh .. Laughing

Macs are overpriced for sure... a lot of the apps they run are actually pretty cool, though.. and the fact that OS X is a freeBSD clone makes it super easy to configure and tweak. also, pretty much all of the malware, viruses, etc circulating the interwebs are made for windoze. OS X runs better on my hardware than Windoze does, too, which is quite lolworthy. my machine still updates through apple update, without any problems... i've been through three kernel updates and it's still running smooth without me having to fix anything.

anyhow, snobbery aside, OS X detected that i'm running Xeons when in fact i'm running a core 2 quad. and why argue over branding technicalities when i'm clearly not concerned with such matters? edit: i'm not suggesting that branding is the only difference between the Core 2's and the Xeons, rather i'm saying that as far as OS X is concerned, and in terms of performance, my computer beats a Mac Pro in some areas and is equal in the rest. I only have 4GB of ram, but my timings are 4-4-4-12 . I really don't ever use more than 4GB worth of apps at a time anyway. I could shove in two more 2GB sticks and beat a Mac Pro there if I wanted to, but i'm not worried about it.

to install and run retail snow leopard without a bunch of modified kernel extensions, you have to have an Intel Core, Core 2, or Xeon series processor. This includes (Core)i3, i5 and i7's.

if you have a good motherboard and one of those processors, PM me and i'll talk to you about how to do it. it's not an easy or quick process though (it took me about 5 days to get mine running at its full potential)

if you have a mobo with a P55 chipset, it's a lot easier, but not essential.

a hacked distro, yes... a legit retail copy requires those processor families, which i suppose could be emulated on a virtual machine but i've got no clue how to do it because i didn't want the extra headache.

edit: you can run it in VMWare, or so i've heard.
