I convinced a Scammer that I work for a IKEA and I craft wooden ornaments. I told him that my staff had been made redundant and all the carving was left me and that I couldn't do it all. He say he would make crafts for me as I offered £500 for each one, I then told him that if he was able to do this I could personally employ him and get him the UK.

Eventually he went to the craftsman and this was his reply:

Dear Mr.

Good evening and thanks so much for both your mobile number and the picture you sent to me but I can't save the pic cos you sent it from a webcam you are using. Well, I was at the craftsmen workshop, they agreed to do the job. I had conversation with the director of the workshop and he said asked many questions which I told him I shall get back to him:

1. How many pieces of the art works do we need?
2. Are we shipping it out of the country to UK?
3. Are we paying in advance?
4. Is the business legal?

Furthermore, he said the mask will cost N9,000 ($60, 30 pounds), the wooden Shield will N3000 ($20, 10 pounds) and the A Boomerang will cost N5,000 ($33, 16 pounds). Total will be N17,000 ( $113, 56 pounds).

Therefore, this is alot of money for me to execute this job as i told you in my last mail that Im jobless for now. I want you know that I'm totally ready to works with you as this will be a means of earning money for my livelihood. Please, get back to me asap on the next step as they told me that I need to pay in advance for the work to get on.

Should I leave it for what I dunno, I'm not that aware of scammers. Is his story bullshit?

he's a scammer. He spends his money to buy time in the internet café, or for his internet connection to scam people. If you can make him spend money on a craftsman, then you're doing great! The craftsman earns an extra dollar, and the lad gets ruined. Go for it!

We almost need more information here. Did this start as a classical scam of some type that you flipped him over to an art modality? How about some more info and headers.

I think if it is a real lad, he is just going to do his best to get the money (lie to you, in otherwords). Slap him good, make him do the work, not you. He is your staff after all. He needs to concentrate on the job at hand.

Basically he emailed me that he wanted financial help. I replied that I couldn't help as I am to busy making wooden crafts and if he knows any that could help then tell me as I would pay them. Then he offered to help but wanted me to buy him crafting tools, I declined so now he is going to a craftsman.

Ok I know how I will convince him that I will pay by sending a picture of a fake check and a fake flight to the UK from, where ever he lives.

I didn't realize how bad these people lie and they literally don't give up.

If the initial email he sent to you was just begging for money rather than an attempt at advance fee fraud, you should not bait him. He may be lying about his situation when asking for money but he's not scamming in the way we target here.

I believe Vampie's suggesting we dont usually bait beggars... Since you can bait genuine real beggar.
Not every email from Africa is scam you know... That's why we bait people who gives us the evidence of Advance-fee-fraud - promising easy money, then giving you nothing. Wink

After I put my Email in the Horses Guest book he suddenly emailed me. I read his story and thought that it was all for sympathy and that we would ask for me bank account details as he doesn't have one himself. If he is generally poor than I'm not going to continue as I think (despite he's a scammer) it's mean.

The only reason I still have suspicions he might be lying is because of his story - it's always a single parent.

Based on that email you posted, I'd let him go. He could be lying, but there are thousands of scammers out there who we know are lying. They deserve our attention much more than a beggar does.

As far as I know, just asking for money through email is not in fact illegal.

Ok judging on the comments I think I'll let him go, I'll tell him I have been arrest for drugs and cannot use computers as the police think I could be talking to dealers.

His story is likely a lie, as you've guessed, but he's straight out begging for money, not trying attempting to defraud you. We don't need to bait the beggars so I'm glad to hear you're moving on. Thumbs up
