"Diamond" Joe Quimby - what's in a name?

Got the name after Reading skeleton coast and the adventures of Troy McClure. Diamond Joe is the mayor of a small American town . He need the money that lads send him to keep cheating on his wife and running the town! So, how on earth do lads not pick up on this? Is there anyone who lives in the 1st world and uses email that wouldn't recognise my character in 1 second. I even give an address of Springfield. Yet, nothing? They don't even register! Do the Simpsons not play in Africa? What is the story? Is the culture that different? Or are they very thick?

Have you heard of Alan Partridge, Reggie Perrin or Bertram Wooster ?

I specialise in obscure, and not so obscure comedy associated baiting names and it amuses me when they reply to them. It's not surprising they don't know all Western TV characters, but you need to avoid the more universal ones and Lads located outside West Africa will probably be more familiar with these characters.

Yeah, khawk, it mainly boils down to simple differences in culture. Heck, I could use all of those references with several people I know and they'd have no idea what I was talking about. Laughing

For me a nice side benefit of scambaiting has been the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the culture in West Africa. In fact, in some instances if you demonstrate some knowledge of a lad's culture to him you will earn a great deal of trust very quickly. Wink

I was baiting a guy who claimed to be from a Nazi Holocaust Reparations Centre, yet didn't bat an eyelid when I told him my maiden name was schicklegruber (Though EVERY German friend I had burst out laughing at that one), and that my lawyer was former Nazi Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels.

I don't think that not watching the Simpsons is quite akin to being thick. Africans do not have the same television programs we have in the U.K/U.S. Depending on the country a lot of programs are considered to be not suitable for their audience. Also things like nudity, sex, swearing are not allowed in these 'god' fearing nations. T.V shows with a political theme are also rarely available. Of course if any 'African' wishes to view these programs, and many do they can get them on DVD and over the Internet/download.
Lads 'usually' work from Internet cafe's and don't have proper jobs, so they are unlikely to have the luxuries we take for granted, such as cable/satellite T.V.
Also ..
You have to be aware that we only bait 'lads' we don't bait 'Africans'. Both of my brothers were born in Africa and they can call themselves Africans.

I Googled one of my barrister's names to see if he was listed as a known 419 alias.

Turns out he was the Nigerian contestant in the 'X Factor' - so lads do it to us, probably more often than we'll ever know. Smile

@Khawk i am a european 1st worldcountry guy.....and to be honnest i dont know who Di@mant Joe is either...Springfield i do know tough so my cultural IQ isnt that low... Laughing

I dont know any of Of gomerPyles pesonages as wel...I dont know if thats a shame or that makes me stupid.

The first Quimby that sprang to mind for me was Fred Quimby, who directed the best Tom and Jerry shows... and Springfield is either a bolt-action military rifle

My mother is a very regular email user and resides in the midwestern US - and would certainly not recognize the simpsons references in the OP (I think she would only spot Bart Simpson and Homer Simpson as known characters. And she would also probably not be fooled by someone calling himself Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel). So even someone immersed in American culture and well-acquainted with the internet may not notice the cultural references that others may think are totally obvious.

It's still amusing to use such names on lads, but you never know when you might be caught. Even if so, most of the time you can get out of it by saying "I was named after X", or "Yes I get that all the time", or even "Yes it's my nickname because I idolize the character".
