Exactly how common is the name "Blessing"?

I recieve quite a few Lad emails from people adopting the name Blessing. Is this really that common and, if so, where exactly is it the most common. Plus, is it a christian or surname?

Yes Blessing is a common name, I met five of them while i was in Lagos Very Happy

blessing is a nice name, it means her parents called her a blessing when she was born, and as she grows up she will forever be reminded her parents see her as a blessing...

As for lads using it, as above its common as can be.

As a bonus tip, if your going to play some games with lads, knowing the names they like to use makes things much more ummm interesting. Especially if you tell them your a new oga called blessing Wink

On a similar but slightly different note.

When lads say "Get back to me soonest" at the end of their mails.

I always ask them who this "Soonest" person is? Or, Plz, my name is not Soonest.

I have a lad on the go who wishes me a Blessed Moment at the end of his mails. I write back blessing his blessed blessing.

Well the president of Nigeria is called "Goodluck" and the I know a "Mercy" from work so I guess this kind of name isn't too unusual.

These kind of names seem to be rather popular. In addition to the names mentioned above, I have also encountered these: Favor, Innocence, Gift, Joy, Beauty, and Glory. I'm sure there are more that I just can't remember right now.

When I used to do research on Nigerian culture to use in baits by visiting nairaland.com and other naija forums, I became interested in the meanings of some of the names of members.

A lot of traditional African names often bestow some sort of religious or divine importance on the wearer. They translate into things like descendant of a king, a gift from god or heaven. Others translate into warnings not to pick a fight with me, or don't humiliate me. It's a common belief that a name can imbue a child with certain qualities. Intelligence for example. Or just make them feel important. A lot of these names are unisex.

I guess it's logical if you are going to give a child English sounding name, you want to convey the same thing. Bright, Prince, Righteous etc. Popular girls names are usually to do with modesty or beauty. Precious is also very popular.

There was a Nigerian boy at my school (all those years ago) called Golden.

it took some funny twists and turns. How common is "Brain"??
Easy, every time they misspell Brian. He mailed me back, corrected
to (Mr. Brian Wood) and ended Brain Wood at mr.brainwood
The correction was just like that, in parentheses, because it was only
temporary...so I kept on calling him Mr. Brain, whaddya gonna do?
