I must be ancient. I remember (now) that there were "dime" and "nickle" bags too. I never knew if that meant it cost 10 USD or if it was 10 oz baggie.
I have found this whole discussion mind expanding... |

Which came first, mind altering drugs or the metric system?
I resent my case. |

It's true Dutch, your post reminded me that people with lots of friends would buy a "key" for a party.
Who says we (Yanks) don't know the metric system???
Are there metric batteries? We have AAA, AA, C and D cell batteries. All are 1.5 volts, just the storage capacity is the difference (plus the size).
Oooh, I found a lovely chart. The problem is the sizes are all metric...
Quote: |
When someone asks you about a Sub C cell are you forced to mutter something vague and quickly leave the room? When someone called trying to locate a 4/3 Fat A did it hurt your feelings? Did you think that only inarticulate Canadians said A-A-A-A? This used to happen to us all the time, so we created the following chart! But keep the following things in mind:
* Diameter can vary as much as 1 mm between different manufacturers
* Length can also vary, and also increase with a protruding end cap.
* Weights listed are just the first thing we found in a catalog in that size. YOU CAN'T COMPARE WEIGHTS OF DIFFERENT CHEMISTRIES FROM THIS CHART. Weight of a cell depends on a lot of manufacturer - dependent things. The purpose of the weight column is to give a feel for how heavy a cell will be. Your results will vary. Batteries not included.
* Not all the sizes in this chart can be found off-the-shelf. But we can get just about any size made for you. Just ask!

^^^ Don't forget the 6V Lantern battery. Does it even have a letter to designate it's size? We just called them "lantern batteries".

With enough of those correctly configured you could start a modern car! (The would have to be wired in series and parallel to achieve the desired result, just saying.)
Also dead lantern batteries were great for throwing a windows... not that I would know anything about that incident. The statute of limitations has surely expired by now.
I love lantern batteries, and yes they are measured metric also.
I read that 4 - F cell batteries make up the inside of a standard lantern battery. I (surprisingly) never did peal one open. I must find a spent lantern battery now.
I suppose that this means that an F cell is also 1.5 volts as 4 of them would equal 6 volts. WOW, the things one can learn in a metrics thread... |

I love the metric system.
Having said that, I admit, I'm from Holland and don't know any better though I'm a flight simulation enthousiast and quite used to feet / naut. miles and knots as well. |
