They've been baiting with someone's real identity. That's to say, they had a guy who was scammed and who confronted the scammer. The scammer then offered this man a way to get his money back, if he brought on new victims he would be allowed to share in the loot.
This guy accepted the offer to give the program the option to infiltrate, but (as he had already been scammed) apparently did so with his real identity.

BAD EXAMPLE!

ETA: Apparently they've also consulted 'experts', anyone here?
ETA2: The wash-wash-lad just sad "Kill me" after they confronted him with the fact that he is a scammer. He started rambling like all lads do on the phone and threw some "Kill me"'s in there (as in, 'if you don't believe me, kill me', without saying the 'if you don't believe me'). The world would be better off if one could oblige the lad in this case.
ETA3: He's now calling the journalist "Racist! Hitler!"
ETA4: Lad is in genuine panic now. These guys deserve all kinds of siggy-icons. Laughing

ETA5: Yeah!!! Lad arrested and sentenced to six months of jail, after which he left the country. These guys deserve a siggy icon indeed.

For all the non-dutchies, the part with panic-lad (see above post) starts at about 15:50 and the conversations with the lad are in English as this lad doesn't speak dutch. The commentary is Dutch of course, but I guess it's still good fun without that.

I don't believe that this scammer was arrested and did time in jail. There was no crime committed as the journalist never payed for those chemicals. The last comment was "he was sentenced for suspicion of fraud" Since when are people put in jail just for being suspect. This whole thing was a bit amateuristic. Besides there was a change to get the lads accomplices too if they wanted. Wash wash scams are always done by at least two or three lads. This looked good for entertainment, but did it do much good?

I just rewatched that last bit of the episode. The voice-over guy says that he was arrested on suspicion of fraud. Then right after that the show goes back to the studio and the hostess says: "John was sentenced to six months in prison and after he did his time, he left the country".

While folks are usually not sentenced based on suspicion, arresting someone based on a suspicion seems like a perfectly fine thing to do Wink

The footage they showed on the wash-wash was filmed in 2000. The lads were talking about Belgian Francs and Guilders. I'm afraid nothing much has changed since, except for the Euro taking over.

First part was about lads trying to sell expensive fluids to some women to overcome their marital problems. Astounding they were getting away with that kind of crap, and probably still are.

I'll definately go watch the show tonight, through the link posted. The good thing about such a broadcast is that it might alert people to scams and perhaps make them a bit more cautious. And perhaps same some (potential) victims.

I had so much fun when the guy that was actually scammed walked away after the confrontation and the lad begged the journalists to stop him because 'if he leaves, I am dead'

Possibly, reading between the lines, the lad was imprisoned and deported on unrelated charges. You can't serve 6 months just on an allegation of selling wash-wash in the civilised world?

I think that the guy(Said) who was a previous victim of the washwash guy did put charges on him and based on that and the footage he been jailed for a poor 6 months.

just watched it - still speaking about guilders - so before 2002. the lad was really shitting in his pants i think, threatening with suicide which may be sth strange and devious in africa - don't know (not many high buildings to jump off of high speed trains to throw yourself upon - poor lads, it will be a poisenous drink or hanging from a tree... )
not the things really happening most, in real life this. but anyways, a good tv-show. i know now, that my relationship can only be saved by paying for 'water'... hilarious.
