Hi guys, just came across this site today after recieving an email from a potential car buyer. He claimed that he was interested in purchasing my car and after replying to 1st email noticed that there were inconsistences in his email. Firstly he wanted to arrange a pick-up agent and that he worked as a marine specialist offshore with no access to internet banking, but access to Paypal. He claimed the car was a gift for his dad. He insisted payment would be immediate after I set up a Paypal account and forward my email address. After my suspicion, i looked around the net for scammer website and after reading this forum decided to play with him instead. I replied with a fake paypal account and he replied immediately saying payment required a $2000 payment to his pick-up agent. If anyone is interested in also toying with this scammer here is his email addresses; [email protected] or [email protected] I having fun leading him on so if you want to join in send him a email or report this scammer.

If you're playing with him from your real-life email account, stop immediately. Never bait a lad if there's any way he can get real information about your identity. Some of these people are serious criminals with connections around the world.

Hi minime and welcome to Eater.

Bohigal isn't often right (in fact this is probably the first instance) but everything in her/his/it's post is correct.

If the scammer has your personal details, our advice is to drop them at once. Although you're almost certainly in no danger, why take the risk? Some scammers operate internationally and just because they're out in West Africa, it doesn't mean that he hasn't got pals in driving distance of your address.

That's not to say that you can't still bait him. Just open up a shiney new Gmail account, make sure that all of your personal details are hidden and go get him!!

You might also publish some of the emails he has sent you to show that the addresses concerned belong to a scammer, not that we are a suspicious bunch here, but you have to appreciate that all we have at the moment is your word. A submission of proof would most likely lead to your lad being given a hard time by several people here.

Sounds like the old overpayment by paypal / pay the agent by WU / get your car pinched at the same time type fiddle.

I have been responding to him with my real hotmail account. Can he access my personal details and IP address from my hotmail account? How do I hide my personal details so he cant seem them?

As soon as I posted on this website he stopped replying to my emails, I wonder if he uses this web or just caught on that I know he is a scammer after I asked him for a photo?

I have stopped communicating with him now.

As for your questions: Yes, he can see your IP adress if you sent him a mail with hotmail. Is that a problem? No - for three big reasons. Firstly, the odds are rather small that he even knows of the existance of an ip adress, let alone how to use it. Second - there can't be done much with an ip adress. The most accurate trace on my ip adress resolves to a place 20 miles away from my doorstep. And third - you are just a probable vic that stopped replying - no harm was ever done. He hasn't got a single reason to be mad at you, he is way more keen to find another (paying) vic than taking revenge over someone that sees through his little scheme. Nothing to worry about.

I don't think he has dropped you because you posted your story here, it's just because you were too annoying Wink

. By that I just mean that you aren't the easy victim that just pays up but wanted a bit of a proof. He understood that you are no easy catch, so he didn't even bother. Yet another reason you haven nothing to worry about Smile

Don't know if it helps folks but i work offshore as a Diver and believe me ALL ships have satellite internet now. It's standard on all vessels. Sounds fishy to me (See what i did there ) Very Happy

. So internet banking is easily available to a marine engineer. In fact a lot of mobile broadband dongles will work up to 12 miles offshore.

I work in satellite communications and can confirm that stabilised earthstations aboard ships are readily available and big business. People expect internet connectivity wherever they are, and ships are no exception.

Caligula: 20 miles? good lad. I've never been able to get closer than about 50.
