So far it seems just about every plane inthe north of the UK is grounded
Looks like Heathrow and London airports to be affected next.
All due to an ashy Icelandic volcano

I'm supposed to be taking my mate to the airport Saturday, he's supposed to be flying to Singapore. Dunno if things will be OK by then, the effect of this will be mega.

It's a sensible precaution though, I do watch Aircrash Investigation, and gritblasting your jet engines is never good.

hi all. its just been on the radio that all airports in the uk will close from 12.00 till 6.00 pm.

Closed to commercial traffic flying on instruments, that is.

The Helimed helicopters and small prop planes flown at about 2000ft are not restricted.

The ash will still be travelling south though, still disrupting air travel. You don't want planes taking off and flying into it.

Well, I'm no geologist, but it's possible that it can last the weekend, given the correct atmospheric conditions, and this first eruption may encourage another one.

This ash cloud is from the eruption which was yesterday I think, I can't be bothered with looking up the facts, but, it does tie in with a recent solar blip which tends to cause tectonic happenings, (Chile earthquake, oh, that other one, Haiti was it?)

forerunner for 2012? End of the world as we know it?
We'll need more than a tin foil hat for that one!

Latest news is that we've got no UK flights until 07:00 tomorrow.

Most flights from North America to the UK and Northern Europe have been cancelled and no word on when they will resume.

Look at the bright side. If you have a lad waiting for you at the Lagos airport now you have a perfectly valid reason for not arriving. Smile

oh..very interesting.so this island mountain glacier,before 2010, last erupted last 1821-1823. it's been too many years since it last erupted.
that's too bad for the business travelers who needs to go to UK or in NOrthern Europe.
hope this wouldn't last too long.

Seems all flights from the US to Europe are canceled.. as they all fly along that route near Iceland..

^They can get to Russia through Japan, leaving from California but I can't visit relatives in Denmark or Sweden because of Iceland's volcano! I did want to visit Iceland eventually, just as long as there is no volcano eruption.

Volcanoes always traumatize me so much, so that I'm afraid to even go to Hawai'i.

The Northern part of the UK has come out from under the cloud, and a flight left Glasgow for Canada, but that's about it for today. Light aircraft are still OK, as there is little risk at low altitude. I dont think my mate is flying anywhere tomorrow, but we'll see.

How bad it is depends which newspaper you read...

Telegraph: No flights on Friday.
Guardian: UK airspace closed until Saturday 01:00
Mail: ...disruption could last UP TO SIX MONTHS.

Says it all really..

Daily Mail readers are already blaming the Government of course, or Iceland. Actually it's all Slightly's fault.

Pete Doherty got excited when he thought the news said there was a huge hash cloud on it's way. Smile
