I'm not sure what type of scam this is, perhaps phishing. The link goes to http:// kirangurung. com/beehives.html
I nearly clicked on it because I do have two current orders with Amazon but the email account this came to is not the I use for Amazon, or I could have fallen for it.

Disabled link to prevent accidental clicking -Ima

I got one of these.

It comes with an attachment which is your "cancellation information".

It has a virus in it.

I had a similar one only that was to 'confirm my order' and giving a link for monitoring progress. As I knew I hadn't ordered anything from Amazon I junked it immediately.

But it shows that some of the scammers are gradually becoming more sophisticated (or more sophisticated people are becoming scammers). By not demanding information they will not raise alarm bells in innocent victims.

I had one, reported it to [email protected]. They responded with a promise to investigate.

I'ma bit of an innocent when it comes to the technical side of computers, but how can clicking on a link, whic htakes you to a website, give you a virus? I understand that opening an attachment or downloading something from the website can infect the computer.

Many pieces of junk get installed on computers this way. The first line of defence is simply not having the rights to install malware. By default new accounts on Windows computers have administration rights. Social engineering gets people to click on things or simply viewing pages with an auto-run java or other script installs stuff.

The second line of defence is often used as the first line. A good anti virus attempts to prevent back code from running if it is recognized. Unfortunately new stuff is written daily.

For me my first line of defence is running a computer that is not running the target web browser and operating system.

Windows running Internet Explorer is like walking at a shooting gallery with a big bullseye painted on your back.

Use something a little less popular to malware writers who target the biggest pool of potential fish to catch.

Attachments can activate a virus in many ways.

1) It could be an executable file disguised as a document.
Filename: AmazonInvoice.doc.exe (oh, its a doc file, so click on it) - wrong, .exe is an executable program and it will run once clicked on.)

2) Word processing programs, and spreadsheets have this thing called MACROS. Open a file, macros are automatically activated, and the virus is in the macro, and activated on your computer.

3) The attachment could be a javascript or other web coding executable file. Open it up and it opens up a local website, but the virus is part of the code and it is activated.

Depending on the version of MS Office installed, macros can be set to disabled or ask me. By default they are enabled. It is recommended to change that right away.

A document with macros opens and a pop up opens stating the document has macros. Do you want to enable them.

Macros are fine for documents you create suchs as a spreadsheet tracking interest and payments on your home loan, but should be disabled from any document sent my email to you. With the macro disabled, the document can be opened and the macro dissected as to it's real function. If you don't write and understand macros, I recommend getting help with them. Malware ones are written to hide the true function.

Attacks on the ability to run code is often launched against applications such as Java, Flash, MS Office, and others.
