This is the first version of a WIMP convincer I knocked up tonight, I need your help and thoughts for what else it needs. Right now, I have selected an MTCN on the list of 20 that Bruin initiated, and the details match, I have selected countries which are likely to be outside your scammers patch and are shitty to visit too, in the hope of getting some movement and one screenshot serves all.

So - what else does it need? It is currently a nonfunctional (duh!) app so I can hack it about a bit according to what you guys feel will help convince your scammers. Post your ideas below, please, and I'll get onto it tomorrow.

If I get everything in, I'll release another screenshot for you all to download and use wherever it is useful Smile

That's a brilliant bit of work!

The one thought I have is that you might want to make it seem more protected - something like this would only be accessible to someone with WU's highest security clearance. Some corporations use a satellite linked pager system for logging into critical pages. Access codes change constantly and have to be entered directly from the satellite uplink. You could simulate this and then let the lad know you had "cracked" it for him.

I agree with Bait Runner. Perhaps (without knowing anything of the context) you might consider putting more 'official' crap around the screen.

How about a button to print the results? Or better yet, send the WRONG print job (a hex dump of some random DLL) to whatever printer is attached but without them being able to stop it. This *should* cause them a bit of pain if they have to pay for printing too.

You could ask them for their email address / password so that you could email their receipt to them. <<--- No, we don't do that because it is considered hacking, which is illegal!

With a slight modification, you could get them to drop bulk entries of failed MTCN numbers from unsuccessful scams ... with requisite victim email addresses / names / details etc. But maybe I am way off here.

It would be great if the baiter could custommised the countries available to fit them with his story.

I personnaly only give lad countries that are likely to get them going and I want to keep control of them. I do not want the lad to decide which country he wants to travel to.

Just for clarification, this is a Windows executable for making good screenshots, and not suitable for emailing to a lad - if you want to mail it to a lad, send him a renamed junk file instead. I will try to add more official crap, indeed would welcome any ideas. I will look into messing with the country list, but it may be easier for me to just do a few versions or it'll start becoming a full-on application and that's a pain in the whatsits. Thanks for your thoughs so far guys, and remember this is for screenshots, not for sending to anyone!

Could you link it to a .ini? that way the users can edit the country list in the .ini and the executable reads the list from the .ini file.

While we're on the topic of .ini's you could have all of the info saved in the .ini and individual users can manually edit the .ini file and all that your executable does is display it in that nice gui.

Well, the original idea is that this is purely for me to make some jpegs for WIMP people to use as convincers - I don't want to get into writing even a simple app, as you then have to deal with people whining that they can't get it to work, that they have to install the .NET runtimes, that they're using a Mac, Linux, etc... Even initialising from .config files will confuse people and defy the original purpose - for me to make a set of screenshots you can send to your lads to make him think you have a tool.

If one of you wants the grief of coding up something, even as a UI against initialisation files, then be my guest. It's not so much the coding as the support that'll drive you to drink, and I speak from a lengthy (and at the time lucrative) experience Wink

If these (slightly fancier) are any better, please feel free to download and use them. I've added a clearer MTCN, a tabstrip to show you can do lots more 'stuff', some official bollocks, an override mode alert, and a progress bar you can check.

If anyone has a specific country list they want shots from, send it to me and I'll replace the enclosed with whatever you want Smile

There's no point me trying to launch this as an app - too much like hard work, it's just a facade, like the buildings on the streets in Wild West movies are just a foot deep.

If anyone wants to use them for a different modality (eg "I can change MTCN cash values/currencies", etc) do feel free, just post here so we can all enjoy it !

Would it be worth having a chat with Deuzer? see if he has any free time to make an interactive version?
This would allow the countries to be set by the user, the sender's name could be changed, the MTCN's could be either randomly generated or the user allowed to add their own. The user could also change the amount, operator's name, pretty much anything?

Still, nice tool as it is.

@ MBL - feedback from the field.

Lads are literally crawling over each other to get in front of the safari queue thanks to these great images. Sure some are suspicious but never about the fake MTCN generator - only ever about my characters.

The strike rate (lads responding to initial ASEM) is really high - about 30 - 70% and is by far the highest I have ever had from any ASEM. Wastage rates (lads that drop away during course of bait) is really low (20%) and none go once they see the screen shots.

They might be suspicious of my characters but the gnawing fear that they might actually have scored the fabulous mystical orphan MTCN ... just too much.

This thing is HUGE. We have sorta limited it to west africa for good reasons.
I am telling lads that I am impressed that they have the intelligence to know that the generator works in countries world-wide.
One lad is being primed to set up a service for the China market.

Suggestion:
Add "Western Europe ->" - with an arrow or something to denote a sub-list
Add similar things for China, South East Asia and so on ... I have had to flick away a lot of necro-sacks and it would be real nice to bring them into the glory of MTCN madness.

We need to let lads know about the successes of the orphan MTCN generator ... working on a dis-education script for mass mailout. Think Gomer.

Thank you for the feedback, it's wonderful to hear you're getting real mileage from it, and that it's working as a convincer for your pets Smile

As for the mass mailout, that would tie up with a plan I have for a couple of weeks time, I'll post here in Main when I'm ready to go public, but I think it'll cause a lot of fun and mayhem. Perhaps you could PM me your ideas and I'll see if they tie in - 'cos you'll love the game I've got planned Smile

Do you mean the fake orphan MTCN's or ...???

Some lads check the orphan MTCN's given by others, find our threads here and then pull the pin. Tricksy lads.

I posted an Excel fake orphan MTCN generator that creates unique ones. Just to be safe, I did not include a checksum. Suggest people use a graphic for lads and post a graphic if they publish the baits.

Name any cell FILLER -

I chose »¤» as a filler string because it is a real cow when it comes to reading numbers on either side. Screws with your vision. Copy it straight from here otherwise use ALT-NUMERIC KEYPAD or insert SYMBOLS from the menu ribbon.

This formula will generate a two digit random number between 00 - 99: =TEXT((RANDBETWEEN(0,99)),"00")

Use this string to separate the two digit groupings: »¤»

So the formula for the 10 digit orphan MTCN is :

=TEXT((RANDBETWEEN(0,99)),"00") & filler & TEXT((RANDBETWEEN(0,99)),"00") & filler & TEXT((RANDBETWEEN(0,99)),"00") & filler & TEXT((RANDBETWEEN(0,99)),"00") & filler & TEXT((RANDBETWEEN(0,99)),"00")

Copy the formula downwards and produce as many MTCN's as you want. Each will always be unique and random (theoretically).

Now really mess with your lad and send his list as an image file like this:

The lad has to manually enter each number and that leaves lots of room for errors.

If you feel motivated post the image file here rather than the orphan MTCN code. Can't search for a string inside an image file.

More countries? Naaa. There is much to be said for lack of specifics.

People see exactly what they want to see / expect to see.
My nursing colleagues would be familiar with the way our brains process visual information when there are problems with eyesight.
In a nutshell the brain will 'fix' problems with an image to make sense of what we see. It's often why eye-witnesses can see the same thing but come up with as many versions as there are witnesses.

Lads really really want this to be real. It sure looks pretty damn good and just might be real. That's as much as we need. Too much detail and this neurological trick might get confused.
Lads sell the illusion to themselves because they are criminals and probably go to sleep at night dreaming of something just like this.
