Although I am Romanian, my family name is Slavic; my ancestors on male line were slavs; Bulgarian or Serbian.
Big problem, because what references I could find point to a region on the border btw Serbia and Bulgaria, where serbians, bulgarians and romanians lived.
Other reference comes to Pristina, in Kosovo.
Hoboy... In the melting pot of Balkans, is so hard to trace one's ginecological tree.

. The word you're looking for is genealogical tree. "gynecological" refers to the female reproductive system.

What can I say... I am a registered mental patient. Usually I wear a shirt with long sleeves. :d just joking...
Anyway, following the maternal line (the only one that matters, IMHO), I am 100% Romanian. A hundred and more years ago it was a la mode for Transylvanian Romanian families to give children latin names. So I had great-great-great grandpas with names like mine, or Iulius, or Traian.
And some with Christian names like Peter, George and John.

Despite the otherwise many linguistic similarities between the two languages, last names tend to differ greatly.

As long as the records you have are within the past 150 years or so, you should be able to tell apart the Serbian names from the Bulgarian ones. The easiest suffixes to spot (although you may not necessarily have these) are "-ic" and "-ich" (Serb) and "-ov" and "-ev" (Bulgarian).

Oh my. Pre-patronymic, I see. That closes one door, but, fortunately, it opens another.

My Old Church Slavonic is a bit rusty, but I do believe that "dan" means "given". Now it's just a matter of translating the rest of the name, finding out what it is that was given, and figuring out which of the two languages the word is native to.

Of course, if you're really unfortunate, it'll be something that is native to both languages (such as Bogdan) and you'll be back to square one. Smile

My grandmother, ethnic German, was born in Romania but in a part that was then part of Austria. Her family moved to Canada before WWI (i.e., before the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) so they never really felt any emotional ties to Romania.

In 1996 I traveled to Romania as part of a delegation to evaluate their application for NATO membership. I mentioned Grandma to some of my counterparts there and they said that her maiden name (Flaman) was a Romanian name and fairly common in Bukovina. It seems that historically Romanians see themselves as a Latin society surrounded by Slavs and Turks. Their track record for treatment of ethnic minorities is less than perfect and many would change their names to Romanian names to try and assimilate. During the Ceausescu era Hungarians in Transylvania had a very bad time; they had to deal with a government program to clear out small Hungarian villages and move everybody to larger towns with Romanian majorities. I met an Air Force officer there who had a Polish surname and he said that hurt his chances for promotion.

I guess the point is: bloodlines in that part of the world are murkier than we think. Geneological, or even gynecological, research would be a real challenge. I doubt if we will ever know if we were cousins.

From my experience, Bogdan is a <strike>given name, not a surname</strike> (and it means God-given).

Wikied it. It isn't as common as a surname as it is as a given name, but it is a surname also

^^ As I'd addressed in an earlier post, last names in the region became patronymic about a century and a half ago. Before that, they followed a similar format as in many Western European countries.
