Tros Opgelicht is airing an item about Nigerian romance scammers tonight. Judging by the teaser they filmed the lads in action, too. NED 1, 21:10.

Great program, all 25 minutes dedicated to love scams. They interviewed 2 victims, one man, one woman, who both fell for it, while being suspicious all the time. The male even travelled to Ivory Coast to meet his girlfriend, was suspicious, but went back and kept on sending money.

They also filmed lads in the internet cafe's. An interviewed lady that lived and worked in Nigeria, and used internet cafe's for checking email, said she was the only one actually paying for the cafe's service. The Yahoo lads only pay a percentage of the winnings to the cafe owner.

Yahoo lads were shown scamming a victim online. The bugger also paid. Made me want to separate some heads from their bodies. Twisted Evil

Then 2 politicians were interviewed, about the role WU and Moneygram are playing in these scams. They promised more supervision, which is already taking place when transactions exceed a certain amount.

All and all: a great job on creating awareness.

Yeah but i'm still affraid that it doesn't yet and will never really help. I mean.. you should read the forums of the programme (opgel1cht.nl).. Some people are just so... i don't want to call them names but if you read their replies on the forums you can say that they weren't the brightest ones of the class.

On those forums people are -still- asking if they email about winning a lottery might be real.. come on.. This isn't 1998..

On the other hand, as long as people fall for it, we can bait.

I feel so motivated to get bankaccounts now and humiliate the faeces out of them. But still going one step at the time ofc. Razz

I always wondered if the cafe owner was in on these scams. I figured he'd have to be, or he'd be too dumb to run a business. Evil or Very Mad

It was a really great episode, nice example of how the media can give a broad picture of these scams & spread awareness in a positive way.

As far as cybercafe owners go - Some cafe owners are in on the scams - others turn a blind eye due to intimidation. And still others try to hold a hard line against scammers, often at risk to themselves.
