Huh - just saw the film (again) and looked him up on Wiki. Turns out he died last week and

What an amazing American. Charlie Wilson graduated 8th from the bottom from the US Naval Academy in 1956 with the second highest number of demerits in school history and went on to become a 12 term Congressman. Senator John McCain was 4th from the bottom in 1958 so they must passed each other as they did "tours".
