I've never received anything like this. IP shows Ecuador, but it's Gmail.
Any ideas of what's going on with this?

The only IP addresses in there are AOL, gmail and an internal one that gmail uses. There isn't one for the sender. Any geographic locator will find only the AOL and/or gmail servers.

So is this a typical Scammer sends cheque, gets recipient to deposit, then send back excess to scammer? Of course when the shit hits the fan, I"m the one who's dragged out handcuffed I guess.

I'm just surprised that he admits right away that he's a criminal. Usually they're protesting how legal everything is.

I have been recieveing emails from this same guy but in mine he claims to be hiring people for secret shopping jobs. I lost the original email but i do have the two follow up emails from im. He says he is sending checks to my po box. I smelled a scam and figured i should look him up and found this posting. My question is should i just shred the checks or turn them in to the authorities? If i turn them in to the authorities will i come under investigation though? i am including the last two emails i recieved from him.

This guy has your address or P.O. Box? This is 100% a scam and if you get any cheques they will be fake, or stolen.

If they are legit stolen cheques it might be good to turn them in so the owner of them (usually some company) can have them back or at least know what happened to them.

After doing some research i contacted a local police detective and aask him the best course of action. The detective i spoke to told me when i recieve the checks to open the envelope to make sure they are in there but to avoid touching the checks if possible then to bring them and a print out of the emails to him. He told me how to trace the ip address and it traces back to amsterdam so i guess the only thing they can do is mail them to the bank to let them know that people are counterfeiting their checks.
I think in the future ill just forward the scam emails i get to someone on here lol

Guys, use an ISP second address from your provider and get a street PO forwarding box and bait these guys. Then use the checks to warn victims. If the postal service is following these checks, expect a real visit from an investigator. Send the victims warning letters instead of checks. Keep all the checks on file, but stamped with a void stamp. An office supply has these. Offer any investigator the fraudlent checks for their investigation.

A great bunch of victim warnings are on www.419hell.com. It's a great read and he has a bunch of call recordings posted on Youtube. I mean a bunch. I've lost a week listening to them. Some are a riot. Great stuff. I think the guy is keeping a low profile now as a local newspaper interviewed him and posted both his site and real name in the article which is online. Oops. He hasn't logged into his youtube account associated with the baits in 9 months. I think he is lying low.

Only a litle bit of searcing is all it takes to find radio interviews and newspaper reports online on his baits and using his real name.

Lesson learned, Make sure radio and newspaper interviews protect your identity.

I want to begin check baits for victim warnings, but I don't have my persona and mail drop in place yet along with a dial up mail account in the US. I do have my VOIP phone address already. Wink

I'm shopping for a SIP adaptor so I can take calls with a machine when I'm away and the computer is off.

By telling you upfront it's illegal, he's making you complicit in keeping quiet when it all goes belly-up, which it will. You'd be the one doing time, as everything traces back to you except for some international mobile phone numbers. If the risk of getting caught was nil, he wouldn't need to spam thousands of people to get someone complicit!

Very eloquent script, does he stay eloquent when you get him off-script and ask him questions? Or has he stolen the format? He may be a bottom feeder who'll get you to mail out 200 packages for him and then vanish.

As for what to do with fake cheques you receive, write FAKE across the front in marker pen so there is no chance of them being cashed. The best any fingerprints will do is to lead you to a mule anyway, and likely as not it'll be an semi-innocent mule (eg being romance scammed and doing a favour for their beloved). Then take the FAKE cheques to work, schools, banks, church groups, and use them as a talking point - hand them around, ask everyone if they could have told they were fake, then explain overpayment/employment/cheque scams and encourage those you tell to tell their friends and families. The personal touch of you yourself receiving these cheques gives the story a local anchor and is worth a million government press ads.
