Hi All. I've been a long time lurker and something happened today which prompted me to create an account here.

I replied to an auto AD on Craigslist which sounded too good to be true but I did it anyway. The person behind the AD replied and I could tell right away that it was a scam, but I played along. Long story short, they requested a Western Union money payment to an individual in the UK. My question is what should I do and how can I go about reporting this?

Fist of all, are you baiting from a real life address?
If so, ignore the lad and bait from a different address Exclamation

If you are safe, go for the baiting. The nearest WU orifice might be 4 days drive away, it would be quicker to do a bank transfer (piggy in your sig.)
Or, delay and drive the lad nuts!

If you have been lurking, I'm sure that you will have some pointers.

My first bait, I just went with the flow. Sometimes I was straight, others I was off the rails but I got two months of lad time from it.

Hi.
There's no point in reporting it. WU payments can be picked up anywhere in the world. There no reason for a scammer to give his real name and address.

First of all - as already mentioned - bait safe! Do not give any trace to your real who. Use gmail, or any other freemail that hides your IP address.

Read the stickies - you might find piece of useful info or some kind of modality. Also check people signatures - they are sometimes really useful links/tools.

Thanks for such quick responses!

I've been corresponding with him using my fake gmail account, so I'm safe from that standpoint. Everything I provided him was fake as well- he wanted my full name, home address and ebay username, so I made them up Laughing

A few other things to note- he provided a fax number which looks like is in the US (area code 408). The Western Union recipient is in the UK.

There's also a fake site associated with this scam (it's unbelievably obvious that it's a fake by the way)

There so many way you can string him along.

what is:
condition of auto
are the tires new
what brand are the tires
you need the cars VIN number to check on carfax
does he have the complete maintenance records for the car
will he fax or email them to you
any chips on the paint
and on and on
Oh! just one more question
one question per email

The Idea is to waste as much of him time as possible
