What do you do when you make a gmail account and it asks for a mobile for verification? Obviously its not made with real details, so how do you get past this?

Hmm, I've never actually seen that myself.
Although I've heard some people say that it's just a random thing. Could try quitting the sign up process and starting again to see if it does the same thing.

Anyone know if the mobile number actually shows up on the account anywhere? If not, it probably won't matter if you use one.

You could always get a K7 number first and use that as your mobile.

A few other folks have had this problem. I've helped a couple of them out. If you aren't able to do it yourself pm me an existing email address, the name/address you want to try for at gmail and a password. The password will only be used to set up the account. Then you will immediately change it.

No you can't. Google uses your mobile to text you a verification code you'll need to enter.

I believe this is just to prevent spam and people from having 300 email addys as this is what spammers do. You are limited to 10 addys per mobile number. The mobile phone is for their use. They won't give it out to anyone for the asking.

If you have a Google Voice number, you can use that and then just check your emails for the message.

I'm in the usa and have 6 gmail accounts and have never been asked for a phone #. They ask for an email address and that's it.

Besides, you cannot get a GV number without giving up a US phone number anyway. The number I think has to be able to take calls so K7 won't work for this either.

If you want me advice Noahflintstone, just give them your cell number. I'm sure google will keep this just as safe as your IP address.

The solution remains to simply keep on trying. Start the process over and over again until you get a free shot. The appearance of this phenomenon appears to be completely sporadic.

Alternatively, get someone else to open one for you.

I would advise against giving them any of your numbers, simply because they do keep track and won't let you open more than a certain number of accounts with the same one. Unless, of course, you only need to open that ONE new account, in which case - by all means - go for it.

Yes, like I said 10 per number.

Try having someone send you an invite. Maybe that will get you around the phone number thing.

I also had the same problem. When it asked for mobile phone number I also gave the country where I am. Then google said the service was not available in my country... Evil or Very Mad

But then I tried it with a different computer and he suddenly didn't asked me for a verification number.
So maybe if you can try it on a different PC?

I gave them my cell number, but then I'm not a particularly secret person, although I do try to be careful/safe.

On the topic of phone numbers, I know about K7 but what's the Google number thing? Is there a discussion on Eater somewhere?

I hear the wait time these days is 1 - 3 weeks. When I applied (back when it was GrandCentral) I waited a whole year. Yes, literally, an entire year. That said, I wouldn't be too disgruntled by the fact that it's invitation only right now.

^^^^^I've never had a problem either, never be asked for a 'phone number. I said I was in another country to the one I'm actually in. Is there any chance that could make a difference?
