I used to come here a few years ago and I learned a bit about baiting but life steared me in other directions and I just never got back until I was hit between the eyes today about the reality of what these people can do to someone.

I manage a storage facility and recently had to seize a unit for non payment. I found a box that was full of printouts from the conversations between the former owner of the unit and a woman who ended up being a scammer from nigeria.

I thought at first it was a bait and settled in for a good read and a laugh but before long, I became horrified, it was real.

All this guy wanted was someone to care about. He was recently divorced, down on his luck and just doing what he could do get by. He made the mistake of falling "in love" with someone he met online.

This scammer and he carried on for 9 months before he finally grasped what was happening. He sent her every penny he had. Sold belongings to get her money. The scam was that she was in nigeria and needed to get home so they could get married and live happily ever after.

Finally after he sent her money several times and started asking questions that made her nervous, she said she was coming and he drove the 400 miles from here to the international airport to get her and suprise, she wasnt there. He got home emailed her desperatly and of course, the desk clerk from the hotel she was living in writes that she has been in a horrible accident on the way to the airport. The poor guy still doesnt get it and is beside himself with worry about her and was so grateful when she regained consciousness.

he finally accepted that he had been scammed and was clearly devastated. That was in the springtime of last year. That fall, he put his stuff in storage with us and was trying to find work in neighboring towns. I knew he looked depressed but he was not a stupid fellow by any means and we had a number of conversations while he was here. I am so shocked he fell for this because I would never have guessed somsone like him wouldnt have seen what was going on. I guess he just wanted it be true so he ignored commen sense.

The last time she was asking for money, she was pretty ugly about it. I think she realised she wasnt going to get anymore and she used every psychological trick in the book to get him to send her another 100 dollars. I just could not believe how she manipulated him into sending one last time. She knew how on the edge he was, yet she pushed him still.

These people must be the very definition of evil. Baiting may seem fun, but it serves a vital purpose and i would like to do what I can to help.

Thank you for the reminder about what these low-lifes do, not much we can do for the poor chap, it is a hard lesson,

At least we can try to stop real people being targeted
