Tell him he is being scammed. Then direct him to this site and go to Scam Warners. There is no way what he is doing is legitimate, remember, it's possible that it's a crime to be involved [even as a victim] in advance fee fraud depending on how it's carried out and the details around it [country where one resides matters too]. |

You are in the best position here to alert your brother to this fraud. We have people that can send him emails with links to various examples, which he may choose to NOT click.
He won't want to believe this isn't a scam. He will be feeling very silly and embarrassed, but you need to convince him that he shouldn't, and now is the time to act.
You know your brother best so find the most effective way for him to take you very seriously. Be calm and rational and highlight all the warning signs that this is a scam. You can email him links to our websites (eater.com & scamwarners.com) Do google searches on the email address and name of this scammer. If they claim to hold a position in a London University, call them and a do a background check. If they are using a real persons name contact them and let them know that their name is being used to scam. Let your brother speak to this person.
Whatever it takes, show him and prove it. |

The other thing you can do, and I apologise for not thinking of it earlier, is contacting your local police, particularly the cyber-crime division (which won't be with your local police) and pass on any information you have about this person.
Have them call your brother, because if this person actually exists and is committing a crime, then the police will investigate.
Also could you please send me any information you have as well. You can PM that information to me by click here. Send me a private message. |

Scammers don't use their real life details in scams. Not when the Internet makes it so easy to be anonymous. I doubt there is any London connection.
A Nigerian lad won't know the iffy reputations of some London colleges. |

is he actually being sent cheques to cash and then send on payments, or is it a love scam?
He will be in denial about sending a young Nigerian lad a load of cash. |

no. he is sending money via western union £200/£300 maybe once or twice in a month for an "investment" in an internet cafe....the "woman" he is sending the money to is supposedly a director of a foreign language college in london...... |

i just think that if anyone was running a legitimate business they would not ask for money via western union..if the business was legit surely a bankers draft or cheque would suffice...i smell a rat! |

It is definitely a scam. he will keep sending money with no return until he realises it is.
Ask him to check up her UK credentials, she wont exist. |

she must have sent your brother some sort of ID, check her details with the supposed college details, if she has stolen an identity then contact that person through the college and ask if she knows anything about it.
Tell his friends, Nigerian scams are fairly common knowledge, he might get made fun of, but better than sending all that money. |

you can pm it if you like
it's just it could be:
-a fake site and could be shut down
-it's a real college but somebody has just used the name of a teacher there
-it's a dodgy college that might employ a scammer who might not even live here
and western union is almost exclusively used by Nigerian scammers and moneygram, who commonly use fake id to pick up payments in corrupt WU offices |

A few warning signs that will help put he seeds of doubt in your brothers mind
1. is this "woman" using a company email? no college would use a gmail account or anything similiar.
2. if he takes the headers from his emails,(this link will show your how http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/19.html) and cut and pastes them into this site http://headertool.apelord.com/ it should give a fairly good indication of where the emails are originating from (unless the scammer is using gmail or hushmail) so are they even coming from London? or do they originate in West Africa?
3. take some key phrases (from the first or second email as this is to a script) or the scammers email address or phone number and google them, do you come up with any scam related links? chances are other people have been scammed by them before and posted their ordeal.
4. Tell your brother to start asking questions, ask if he can use a bank account, ask why a legitimate business would use WU, no business should use an untraceable transfer system. watch her squirm when she tries to convince him its the best way and wont accept any other methods.
5. call the college in question, if it really exists (dont trust the website they linked to it, use a phone directory to find it) and ask to speak to this person regarding it. the person wont exist or wont know anything about it if they do. (stolen identity)
6. encourage your brother to come have a chat to some of the people here and at scamwarners.com some of the folks at scam warners might even talk to him over the phone if it helps. (what country is he in?)
7. the picture of the woman, is fake, not her, no doubt about it. if you put that picture into this site, it will show you where the picture was taken from on the internet www.tineye.com
pm me if you would like any other help before this goes any further |
