How can someone visit this site and still fall for the scam ?

because their format is: you are previously a victim of scams so go and look at this site (eater) to confirm the fact you are not alone and are a victim, the front page of eater isnt the forum, its a warning about being scammed. Hence the link gives them credibility. What the poor victim doesnt realise is they are being groomed and there will be fees to get back what they lost. It doesnt matter if they arent an ex victim, a lot of people will get greedy and just think they can claim fictional money lost anyway. Evil or Very Mad

I don't see that as a bad thing. If someone does follow the link, it would hopefully switch them onto the idea that they're being scammed. All they'd have to do is ask if it's legit on the forum and we'd be able to put them right.

Better to have the link there than not at all.

How about putting a specific warning on the main page, addressing the links from these recovery-scam-mails? So far they're not mentioned in the scam list, and a big "WARNING" for possible victims might help here.

This lad has obviously had his password phished by a baiter and the baiter has gone to his format list in Draft folder and put a little message to any potential victim in the middle of the format steering them to www.419eater.com
Lads are lazy and wouldnt check their format thoroughly before the bomb it out to their mailing list and I think it is ridiculous that anyone would think that the lad is trying to use 419eater as credibility and (although lad inbox hacking is frowned upon here) a job well done by the baiter in my opinion

^ That doesn't make any sense though.. Why would a baiter with no bonds to us put in a link to eater? If I were smart enough to hack into lad boxes, I'd put up my own small warning site and link to that one.

Thats actually the greatest thing EVER! If said lad's account is actually compromised, I would go further and modify the script even more. Somewhere in the middle of the script, perhaps, or just at the beginning, subtly stating that this is nothing more than a scam, as well as leading potential victim to this site.

If it is true that lads are too lazy to check scripts, this can work to a baiter's advantage. The lad would be doing all the legwork in sending his specially modified script, working against him. The more de-education/script changes in the baiter's favor the better.

This may blur the lines however in such that you are accessing someone else's account without their knowledge, but no real harm is done to their account, only their scripts. I like it.

Nope, here at Eater we don't hack lads boxes to play with their scripts, that was genuine lad logic to use that link. Here it is important to maintain the moral high ground, so no mud will stick and we are better individuals than the scammers we harass.

We had a scammer on the (defunct) radio show who claimed live on air to be the owner and designer of this site, so lad logic is a bizarre oxymoron.

Well be that as it may, this can still be used to this site's advantage. Someone posted earlier to address that kind of email, sending the potential victim here. Fine, in that case post something on the front page saying, "If you were referred to this site by an email claiming not to be a scam" or whatever, and then simply take it from there.

This kind of lad logic is also beyond me, and I may not be a baiter, but even I am well aware that this is a kind of golden opportunity; and I am sure that baiters and even admin(s?) of this site can turn such lad logic against them (if they haven't done it themselves already).

Perhaps there needs to be a new course for EaterU, lad logic101 and it's mysteries.

@ manbiteslion - Full respect to the eater crew and the rules that I myself follow but do you seriously think that EVERYBODY on here has the same "cookie cutter" views and follows the rules. Surely you can't just write off my suggestion because the mainstream have a moral code and rules they follow

@ Happy_Slacker - Don't try to get into lad inbox's, these people are criminals that we deal with and it is illegal... better to get them doing wacky tasks, travel and get tattoos instead Very Happy

I seriously doubt the hacking angle. What is far more possible is that a baiter convinced a lad to let them rewrite their script for them. I've done that on more than one occasion.

^^ It's certainly possible. Back when I was a hacker (I don't do it anymore, please don't send swarms of angry mods after me!) I used to edit lads' scripts and insert ridiculous levels of profanity. This one wasn't me, but a sufficiently skilled baiter who doesn't follow the Eater rules could do it easily.

I can't say which is more likely, but I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss this as hacking.

As Jason said in his second post, lad put things like this in their formats to help validate their scams. That's why in recovery scams they put links to various law enforcement websites. Most lads still don't know what we do here, or understand. It's fairly common.

The way that email reads, it looks like all of the lad's own work.
If a baiter was involved, you could pretty much guarantee that the mail would be a little more "flamboyant". I would also suspect that a baiter would have redirected to scamwarners.com where Recovery Scams are discussed in-depth.

@BlackDog. There are many ways to get a lad to change his format, without having to illegally hack his box. Many baiters here have been successful in "educating" the lads so that they insert things into their scripts. One of the easiest ways is to bait as an oga, gain the lad's trust and then offer to "help" him.

All this aside, although I don't see it as a problem when the lad puts our link in his mail, I don't think it's something we should purposefully encourage as, if you do encourage a lad to mention Eater, and a victim falls for it as the lad in this mail has intended, you may be partly responsible for the victim losing their cash; however good your intentions.
There are far better ways to screw with a lad's format if that is your aim.

The way I see it, since they are sending this same e-mail address to 50.000 people, some will follow the link, and some won't and fall for the scam. If someone is so gullible as to fall for this mail, they may be dumb enough not to follow the link or read what this site says.

The moderators of this site should post a warning on the index page just to warn people that nobody is giving away a million dollars.

Have to say I agree with this.
When I get a link in my E-mail, normally I won't bother actually clicking it, or just glance at the page the link leads to without going in deeper.
If a victim actually falls for the scam and loses money, they may partially blame 419Eater because they saw it used in the initial letter.

Maybe add one for recovery scams. Up to this point a rather stupid victim could possibly think "yeah, I've been there, and I'm so happy someone is going to reimburse me".
