Hi Folks !

Thanks to Sheboppe I have regained access after a long involuntary absence. I have been off the site for a year or so. There have been some very strange things happening down under.
In fact I doubt many Australian members have much knowledge of this because of an almost total media blackout on the matter.

In the past few days Australian radio 2SM has elected to take calls on the matter on talk back radio. Their phones have run red hot and this only for starters. The story goes like this:

A farmer from Cooma NSW has gone on a very public hunger strike atop a wind tower on his property.

Today is day 38

The reason:

As a resuli of the Kyoto Protocol, The Australian Federal Government has delegated the power to the State Governments to lock up most afforrested land on farms in Australia and deny farmers the right to use, maintain or develop this land. This dictum also includes land that is deemed to be regrowth land.

The total area of the locked land is alleged to be 109 million hectares

This made a great number of farms unviable and even insolvent.

Peter James Spencer was one suich farmer.

Having exhausted any legal rights for "Just Terms" compensation in nine substantive court actions, he chose this course of action to inform the public as to what was happening.

The enormity of his plight has been largely akin to that which occurred in Iran, Word has spread via mobile phone and intertnet. Mainstream print and electronic media will not print a word of this.

Excellent news. Soon we'll be rid of all those pesky farmers.

I doubt the media would black this out. It could be that is wasn't news-worthy enough, or there were other stories with large death tolls. If it bleeds, it leads.

Media don't black things out, unless you live in a media controlled dictatorship, which we (I) don't.

Your response is exactly why the media blackout works. Go visit a few farmers as well. That will fix your reservations. Pesky farmers are the producers of the food you eat. When they you will have to make do with contaminated milk and prawnd grown in sewerage treatment works

i think the media blacks thing out by speading untruths so the facts are diluted
for example(in a nut shell) On the radio this morning it was reported that special forces had killed 8 people in afghanistan because some had brought out weapons
then on CNN at the airport they were reporting that a suicide bomber had killed the 8 people. which one was it?

Why Nasty? I was merely explaining what happens and disputing a claim.

Reporting is not an exact science and they never makes excuses for it. Media like facts, but most of the time they don't have them all, and don't care. It might have been 8 of something that blew something up. First reports are always sketchy. They just amend the story at the next report. Maybe someone made a typo, these were actually two different events or you heard it wrong. (Blame user error)

Suicide bombing is not a disgruntled farmer story, so it's not a good example. Don't make me start on you. Very Happy

Don't worry NN, you know all your food comes from the US in exchange for the Kangaroo Mc Donald's tm uses.

Media will do what it needs to to make money like any other business. Perfect examples...Tiger Woods and Balloon Boy here in the US. Things like that grab the attention of people with no other interests. We have blatant acts of terrorsim occurring but ooo Tiger's banging a cougar and there may be a six year old trapped inside.

If the images and stories are making it out by celly and internet about this farmer, even the BBC doesn't care for it, and they cover EVERYTHING!

With regards to the OP (and at the risk of being political) - for that situation to be disregarded by the Australian, which has consistently maintained a policy of climate change scepticism and, IIRC, was no supporter of the Kyoto accords, is plain weird. It seems to be grist to their mill.

What is sad is that Australian members of this forum appear to have no knowledge of this matter. And I can't respond " go read a paper" becuause it won't be there!
The individual farmer is not the sole issue, This legislation affects every farmer who has trees on his property.
I reject the proposition that this is politicaL. fOUR GOVERNMENTS OF DIFFERENT POLITICAL PERSUASION HAVE NURTURED THIS LEGISLATION.
Their main authority stems from the Kyoto protocol, which BTW, the Us has not ratified, unless they have done it recenjy.
The real argument is that governments of developed countries can claim they are meeting Kyoto targets by preventing property owners from clearing their properties.
This why France claimed Australia was cheating at Copenhagen. Australia had noy done one thing to reduce emissions from serious polluters. It merely claimed that it prevented clearing of 109 Million hectares of trees belonging to farmers. That claim applied to the past year and is really only valid for that year. eg serious bushfires could erode that notional credit.
For the uninitiated, farmers need cleared land for cropping and grazing.
Acquisition of property without Just Terms compensation is forbidden by the Australian Constitution.
It's nice to be green
, but there is a range of needs we have to survive as a species.
We are now starting to get limited TV and press coverage. Most people were previously afflicted with the NIMBY syndrome.

I am and was aware of it. Difficult not to be. I can't rid myself of regrowth without a very long winded special permit. I can maintain firebreaks around the property but I can't remove a tree that has sprouted on cleared land. Satellites photograph all areas and comparisons are made. Heavy penalties apply. The drought killed a few though. Wink

I understand the reasoning behind it and am in favour of the Kyoto accord but the application of the law is flawed.
Wild fires cleared tens of thousands of hectares and did enormous damage, taking established forest with them. Selected clearing and removal of regrowth would have prevented a lot of the fires being conflagrations

To all the unbelievers, I commend this article in the Saturday Daily Telegraph. It is no more than I expected. We are striking this even with neighbours in our own streets. The Australian membership may like to sheath their claws and beg, borrow or steal a copy, read it and pass it on to the Australia newspapern who wouldn't miss a story like this.

To NN in particular this is how a media blackout works. And the actions we are taking is one way of busting it open.

Is it political? I think it might be more little green men and other conspiracies in action. For one thing the junk science by both sides regarding "global warming" (it's 5 degrees Fahrenheit here!) it flying inthe face of the scientific proceedure. I was taught the goal of science was to prove a hypothesis. Neither camp pro or con can get their ducks in aproper row before running to the press decrying the other side. We need unbiased scientists with no fear of funding cut offs to prove this or the other theory to be correct by showing un impeachable facts.

Funny the mention of the ugly beast called Kyoto. We won't even go there, except to say it is unrealistic.

...and now for something completely different.

Badgerbait, one reason "climate change" replaced "global warming" was because an overall rise in global temperatures doesn't mean warmth everywhere - but it does mean different and more unpredictable weather as patterns change.

That would obtain whether the cause of said climate change was human actions or natural processes.

here are a few uninpeachable facts for you then...
1- we are putting more co2 into the atmosphere than natural processes can remove
2- we have been doing that for quite a few decades now, so co2 levels are steadily increasing - see http://co2now.org/
3- co2 is a greenhouse gas, so the planet will get warmer if co2 concentrations continue to rise

or whether we are causing it to change more rapidly or in different ways than it otherwise would (we are)
but whether we should spend the money on mitigating change or on coping with the consequences.
