I admit I have a problem...

I can no longer buy electronics. I just can´t do it. It´s not for any reason such as a conversion to Communism, it´s a simple fact that I get vexed the minute said goods are even very slightly scratched.

It started a few years ago, when I bought a camcorder in Dubai. I spent all night polishing it, only for a grain of sand to mark the outside. I nearly cried.

Ever since then, any laptop, phone, TV, anything remotely consumer electronic, I´ve studied with microscopic detail to ensure no marks.

My latest purchase, a Samsung S8000 phone (for 3.1" Eater-on-the-go), is marked. Samsung advise you remove the screen protector before use, which I did. Later that day, after light use, I notice three under-the-surface scratches.

Fuck. Just a week old, and I´m still not over it. Instantly, I bought a screen protector thingy to ensure no more marks, but fact is, they are there. True, I must tilt the phone into a certain light to see them, and they don´t impair usage in any way, but I know they´re there.

I think I posted about this before, but does anyone else suffer...?

Personally, I cannot stand nice clean shiny flawless surfaces on any electrical gadgets. They should look used and lived in.

I just bought the good lady wife a new stainless steel bright shiny toaster and the first thing I did when we got it home was to take a nice piece of emery paper to it and........

Can someone please throw some water on Craig? I think he's fainted.

You have my sympathy Craig, not much of it, but some, I'm the same way with my camera lenses. I learn the expensive way not to let my sister borrow/use or in any way touch my cameras. 200mm Nikon came back with a bloody great fingerprint right in the middle, plus scratches where she'd taken the filter off to give the lens a wipe with a piece of cloth, that was probably #80 grit sandpaper.

Anything else is fair game though, if it doesn't look like it survived the party it isn't worth having.

Easy peezy solution . .get some bandaids (plasters) to cover the scratches . .problem solved .. out of sight . . out of mind.

I understand your pain Craig. I feel that way about my car. 14 days after purchasing my very first brand new car a young man driving his dad's SUV ran a light and clipped me. The insurance company promised that the huge dent and scratches would be non-existant after the repair shop was done. 6 years later and I can still see the faint color difference between the quarter panel and door although everyone else says there is not any difference and I am imagining it all. The worst is that the hood has a tiny chip in it that shows the orginal color underneath.

When my dad scratched the car by rolling the wood chipper across the driveway and cut the corner too close, thus putting a small horizontal mark on the bumper, I about had a heart attack.

I think each of us has a little bit of OCD. I have two manifestations. The first is that I'm a grammar nerd. The second is being punctual. I am so paranoid about being on time that I'm usually very early.

One must simply learn that the world does not run according to our "druthers." I used to correct faulty grammar - now I just grit my teeth and let it roll over me. Perhaps in time, Craig, you'll learn to overlook those minor flaws, or at least to tear your eyes away from them without too much agony. Wink

I'm still usually early for appointments, though.

I'm also paranoid about keeping my computer clean and crapware-free. (I have a wider definition of 'crapware' than most people, so it's even more fun.) I literally cringe every time I have to touch my girlfriend's computer. It's just... horrible.

@ Craig - I inspect and repair electronics, for a living. I don't like it when a part is even slightly crooked on the PCB. But, sometimes I have to let them slide because they have a good electrical connection and fixing it would risk damaging the board. Nothing I handle gets seen by the customer.

@HH, you are mean, I twitched reading your "suggestion". That has been recommended to me previously and I considered it for a half second then discarded the crazy idea. Scuff up a perfect item to fool your perception. Some things just cannot be undone.

@SOOI, If you are going to put me up against the wall, please make sure that it has been freshly painted or at least recently sanitized. I don't want my essence mixed with anyone elses.

Yes, all of the mistakes are intentional because you all thought it was funny to poke at my brodda Craig. The good/bad thing about Firefox is that it places a red underline to show spelling errors it finds. Sadly Firefox does not recognize scammer as a real word. I have looked it up in several dictionaries and I am spelling it correctly, but Firefox does not believe me... Evil or Very Mad

@Craig - I really do understand why the damaged electronics bother you. When my cell phone went missing, I was upset. I was even more upset when I found out it had fallen out of my pocket and was under my car at the doctor's office. Now there's a little nick and scratches on the clip. The oily film that gets on it annoys me, as well. I keep alcohol wipes with me.

Okay! That did it for me. I can take all those apostrophes in the above post but the spelling of truly as truley is the last straw. I admit it. I lied about scratching shiny things. I just didn't want to agree with Craig.

And if someone as much as puts a fingerprint on my car I go ape.
