I know those are usually female names but I have a female cat named Groucho after Groucho Marx because she is a black cat with a perfect white moustache so what do I know.

I had a sandy coloured cat called Biscuit and a black and white cat called Cookie. I also had a dog called Muffin. I think I was going through a bit of a food fetish at the time...

LOL The funny thing is - he's from where Bill Clinton is from. The exact location in AR!

Anyway here's what I found out today:

The rescue is wanting to call him Mr. Smith ...... a generic name referring to the fact that there are so many of them out there that could be in this situation.

So, I took him to the vet again. He got his X-ray:

The vet said this is a "mess". He can't do anything for the kitty. It's beyond his abilities. He wrote the following note:

So he needs a major surgery - - seeing an orthopedic specialist. I sent the information to a vet in NYC and she suggested a procedure called FHO http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Femoral_head_ostectomy This will cost us about $1,500 in NY. So, I have left a message with the doc I saw this morning and asked if he's heard of this - can he do that procedure? The vet in NYC said the same thing about his back end: "ok - yep his back end is a mess - but as I keep saying, if he is doing ok right now just leave him alone until you can get him to a surgeon who can do something for him (ie in NY)"

Here's a pic of him lying in my lap (I did NOT drive with him like this - he was safely in a carrier that was seatbelted in). I was in the parking lot at the vet's office arranging materials before putting him in the carrier. You can see the bone sticking out of his hip. It's completely broken off the hip.

Please keep all positive vibes coming. Send the best kitty thoughts ever so that I am able to continue to try to get help for this little guy!

Oh and one more thing - he does NOT like for me to leave him. He will try to walk and follow me. So I now take him everywhere - even to the bathroom with me. I keep him in a carrier and then let him out every once in a while to go potty in the litter box. Then I feed him in the carrier. The vet said that the only reason he walks is because he has to. So, I am trying to not make him have to. That means I have to stay near him because he meows for me and will walk to try to find me. Poor kitty.

There's only one name possible for him: lucky. You are a great person Eliza! This kitty knows he has to stick with you to survive so take good care of him.

Nelson would be my suggestion for a name, or Lucky Nelson which has a nice ring.

It's very nice of you to take him and look after him like this. I'm sure you're aware that the number of people who would do it is incredible small.

Cooking Fat.

We had a cat once that cause all sorts of problems around the house. I was only little and I was sure the cat was called Cooking Fat. At least thats what my father called it. He was always asking where it was. HE used to shout "Where's that Cooking Fat"

At least thats what I think he said. Laughing

My cat is called Deja (French for 'already') from Deja Vu (something a friend said the night a strange cat was hanging around his house).

Eliza - I'm late to the fair I know, but I'd suggest Deja - your poor kitteh has already been through hell.

The ability of cats to heal is remarkable--we have dealt with cats and kittens with back ends that are pretty much shattered who have gone on to lead long happy lives, so the effort is definitely worth it.

It is also a wonderful feeling, knowing your efforts have made a difference in making that happen.

If money is a significant barrier (isn't it always in this industry?), an appeal to the public with his story can raise much or all of the money needed for the surgery, and if you aren't looking to keep him, it is amazing how many people will line up wanting to adopt him, too.

If you decide not to go with Mr. Smith, here are a few names I can think of that some of our tripods and other severe cases have had over the years...

Tripod
Ihop
Tres (as in Uno, Dos, Tres)
Sir Limps-a-Lot
Trouper (I used it myself for a cerebellar hypoplasia kitten I fostered several years ago)
Lancelot
Miracle
Faith
Zeus

Of course the name doesn't have to be connected to the story--our latest soon-to-be tripod is Borden, because he has a milk mustache...

Is this surprising?All this poor cat has ever known is abuse.To him you mean comfort and love,two things he has never known.I hate lads as much as anyone here,but someone who would subject an animal to this is even lower in my book.Sometimes I think my brother functions as a one man cat rescue society,but this one is worse than any he has ever brought home.You are doing a wonderful thing ED,my hat is off to you.

As brilliant as many other suggestions have been, I want to add one more: "Salvage."

I followed the Wikipedia link which you provided, describing the operation which this kitty is likely to need,
and was struck by the repetition of the word stating that this is a veterinary procedure typically done as a "salvage" measure.

the free dictionary shows the word as both a noun and a verb.
I especially liked one of the verbal definitions:
