I am in the state of Maryland and am currently getting hammered with snow right now. The news is varying right now and one channel is saying 12 to 18 inches of snow and another was saying 20 to 30 inches of snow. They were also saying how this storm is going to rank in the top 20 of the biggest storms in the state of Maryland and that this storm will set a record for snowfall for the month of December. I am very excited and am really hoping for the 30 inches they bare calling for.
Is anyone else going through this snow storm as well? It's pretty spectacular and beautiful outside.
Apparently our record amount of snow in one snowfall is 14 inches for the month of December. Let's break this record Marylanders!

Yikes, that sounds horrible. I had 32 winters in Winnipeg, Canada so I know what winter is all about! I would almost prefer it to the foggy town that I live in now. When it's summer and it's foggy for weeks on end and 55-65 degrees...it's extremely disheartening.

May I ask where you live? I think this is freaking awesome! I absolutly LOVE the snow. All the newscasters are panicing and freaking out1 If you get a chance you can look up wjz.com and it will show the one meterologist Marty Bass getting all panicy. This snow is supposed to go for the next 18 hours and we already have about 4 to 5 inches. Al Gore always has his little global warming conventions in the winter and he always gets snowed out...ha ha. Your right global warming is a crock of shit.....

Oh No!Marty Bass is in a panic-now I know it is serious!Trouble is,one flake falling from the sky sends him into a panic.I'll admit this is a major storm,but you really need to live in Maryland to understand how people freak at the mere hint of snow.People mob the stores to buy bread,milk,and toilet paper.Those who come from areas of the country where snowfall is common find this all rather bizzare.Still,I agree with grlnxtdr681,it is pretty out there this morning.

Meanwhile under the English Channel, freezing cold trains dived into the Channel Tunnel, which was warm and damp, causing condensation and huge flashovers, crippling the electric locomotives.

Result = chaos. Sad

Don't get Craig started on global bloody warming again, it never ends well.... Wink

Right now we have 17" of snow and a blizzard warning until 6pm so we have another 2 and a half hours of blizzard like conditions. I am LOVING this! I hope we get A LOT more! I have to reiterate again global warming is a crock of shit! It is absolutly beautiful outside. Good time to just lay in bed snuggle and get laid...lol. Speaking of bread milk and toilet paper we went to the store this morning and no milk. Bread almost all gone. People are crazy in the state of MD and don't know how to drive or do anything when it snows. They have closed major stores now also. They have closed the Target in Owings Mills as well as the Best Buy in Owings Mills. I was called out of work and they said I might not have to come in tomorrow maybe. I LOVE this weather. Hey Doc are't you in Towson?

I'm on the East Coast - of the UK. We also have snow, but just no as much.

As for global warming, why do people assume that warming means winters are going to warmer? The truth is it means weather will most likely be more extreme, so summers are likely to be hotter and drier (in places) and winters colder and wetter (again in places).

I spent parts of several winters in the Washington DC area and
was there for the March 1993 "snow hurricane" blizzard.

It is a little chilly here in West Central Florida at 57 degrees F. This is a very nice break from the miserable heat we have here most of the year.

Anyhoodehoo, it will never snow where I live. It just doesn't get cold enough. A cold winter here is maybe 38º F and that will only last a few days.

Within the very same decade of the 1970s, I lived in:

(a) Charlottesville, Virginia, USA, where three INCHES of snow closed down our schools
(a prudent decision because school buses and/or bus drivers were not equipped to handle hilly routes on snowy roads);
(b) St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, where we had a snowfall on June 10th -- during northern hemisphere "summer"
(a date which I distinctly remember because it was my daughter's birthday); and
(c) Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, where for two years in a row we had 80-inches-of-snow (first I couldn't FIND my car in a parking lot filled with snow-mounded cars; then I found my car and spent several hours clearing it of snow and ice, but of course it wouldn't start; and when I called AAA -- American Automobile Association -- for a battery jump, I was told that it would take three days, three DAYS, for them to arrive to restore me to have a functioning car.

. . . today in Northeastern Pennsylvania USA where we got a bit of snow but missed the Maryland/DC/Philadelphia/NYCity "blizzard," I am simply waiting for my neighbor's son to show up with his snowblower so that I could get on the road, if I need to . . . well, as long as the ELECTRICITY stays on, I can be content to stay in here and enjoy the scenery for a day or two.

I lived in San Antonio during the 80s. In Jan of '85 we got 13 inches of snow and the city was paralyzed for three days. Later I moved back to the Midwest and since then have not seen that much snow at one time. Here on the other side of the Appalachians we only got about an inch.

I have friends in northeast Ohio and upstate New York where the term for 13 inches is "a dusting."
