Controling someone's Hotmail account

This one's a bit strange, and I have no experience with this type of scam,
Late last week I received an e-mail from what I thought was an old friend
In Sydney. BUT it was titled HALLO. Which this person would never do.
On reading the e-mail it was clear it was not him.
This is his e-mail. I have permission from him print his address, as this
is important.

I phoned my friend, to be told that some weeks ago, he got an e-mail, from Hotmail, Asking him to up-date his e-mail account, and would he please provide his e-mail User name and password,, which he did.. Consequently this person now has his Address book.
He now has no control over this account, and all his mail goes to this unknown person.
On my advise he has now Changed his e-mail address and informed every one about the change, and not to use the old Hotmail account. I have requested he does not Cancel the old account. And have his permission to print it in full here.

I replied with a short note, again using his old Hotmail account address

I then checked with my friend and he has not received this e-mail, So the Scammer
is controlling the account.

So if anyone reading this can offer any advise or would like to give this person a hard time, please do.. I think I've done all I can do. I will continue with the bait, even if it's not my thing

Your mate should just alert hotmail he was phished and have the account closed. Hotmail will record the login information and decide if they want to take it further.

Then if your mate wants his email account back he can have it, and we'll remove this thread from the forums.

It looks like the lad has hijacked your friend's account and is spamming from a gmail account using the hotmail addy as a reply to.

Your friend could/should get the account back from hotmail and then close it. IMO this is one instance when an email account should be shut down.

You seem to be baiting from your RL address as it was in your friend's address book.
Which is a bad idea of course.

I would be surprised if "12 Hagley Road, Birmingham" was an unambiguous residential address. I wondered if it was the IBM offices, but according to Google Streetview, it's a building site:

Im a little confused...if you send a mail to your friends hotmail...it goes to the scammers gmail?
I dont know how to forward from hotmail to gmail but I guess you can through gmx.com?

Has your friend still got access to his hotmail account? tell him have a look at the filters to see if there is anything out of the ordinary,

you friend should send a mail to his entire adrssbook as well tell he is phised and iff anybody ask for money NOT to send even 1$.....

scammer prob didnt change password so he would not raise any suspicious of the real accountholder

Thanks for all the info..

While I got the scammers e-mail requesting cash, in my IP's account, I sent the reply via a Gmail account. I would guess he had no idea who's address he was sending to, as he simply sent the same thing to everyone in the address book. By simply using the "replied to all"

As far as my mate goes, that address is dead and buried. In fact I think it's scared the shit out of him, that something like this is even possible. As far as I know , everyone on his address book has been sent a warning about this and to disregard anything they get from the old address.

It's really not that big of a deal using your personal addy for this. The account has been closed, everyone one has been warned, and your friend learned a little about phishing. Well done.

There was something in the press several weeks ago that a lot of hotmail accounts had been compromised. Hotmail knew exactly which accounts and were supposedly forcing these people to chane their passwords. My account wasn't one of them.

A friend had their Yahoo account taken over in a similar way recently, and while he got it back the scammer did email his entire addy list, not realising my friend is an wheelchair, and so was unlikely to travel to Nigeria for a "Seminar".

I tried baiting the guy as my friend's ex wife but no bites Crying or Very sad
