True tidbit - the original program upon which the movie is apparently loosely based was codenamed "Stargate".
In 1981, a US brigadier general named Dozier was kidnapped by the Red Brigade in Italy. Stargate was asked to provide information about where he was being hidden. Allegedly, Stargate psychics came up with an address of an apartment building in Italy, plus the inconsistent fact that Dozier was being held in a tent. They were ignored.
Some weeks later, Italian police (using more traditional methods) located and rescued Dozier. He was being held in the very building identified by the Stargate psychics - - plus the kidnappers had set up a puptent in one room of their apartment, and were keeping Dozier in the tent.
The program was eventually abandoned because, while there were some spectacular "hits", for every hit there were several complete misses, and there was no way to distinguish between the hits and the misses until weeks or months later when more conventional espionage information would be obtained.
