We're back on the Chad bait? Does anyone care about all the innocent fruit and vegetables I have sacrificed in the name of baiting? Melons, Banana's and poor defenceless grapefruit.

Personally I think this thread needs some Global Warming. Without a discussion on this subject we're all going to be in the dark about this mysterious problem.

I totally agree with Mugu_eater and Slightly. My credo is no mercy! That doesn't mean i'm doing this out of revenge but to try to divert the lads from real victims. I'm not a sadist either but to read that my lad is really pissed off by something i made him do really makes my day.

@Slightlyoutofit believe it or not I agree with you. I have not a doubt in my mind that the majority of the scammers wouldn't hesitate to steal a dying child's hospital money, after all the specific guy was going to Chad thinking he was about to rob a church. And the safari was hilarious. All I was saying was that I do not believe in the death sentence, and I would feel that leading a lad to his death would be, for lack of a better phrase, a little off, despite the fact that he brought it upon himself. As I said though, I felt worse for the innocent guy who got conned into driving him across Chad, and getting dragged into the scambait, rather than the scammer.

Anyway, I've only been here a month and the ethics topic is already getting old. Laughing

For those who have been here for years: I understand how annoyed you guys would get at these threads.

As I recall he got paid. Driving across Chad is what he did for a living and so long as he wasn't mislead by a baiter into thinking there was money at the end of it there that didn't exist I have no problem with that.
Inocent driver gets paid and feeds his family, two scammers are left streded hungry and broke in a war zone, all's right with the world.

Let's abstract this briefly before the lock arrives, just to reset the problem - if I own a shop and you buy a newspaper from me, am I responsible for where you got the money? There's no coersion involved. Out of laziness, greed or a criminal attitude you may have stolen something to get the cash, but I did not coerce you.

Baiters lay a trail of breadcrumbs that only appeal to criminally minded types, the criminal ALWAYS has a choice, nobody is threatened with murder (unlike hitlads), lads get themselves into trouble, we just make it easier for them to do so.

There will always be "but what if"s, which is where it comes down to your own compass, the point is there are no hard fast rights and wrongs (except cash baiting, which literally brings us sown to their level!)

I've been told to prostitute my teenage daughter to pay scammer fees, frankly a voluntary holiday in another country is chickenfeed by comparison.

I know there's no right or wrong answer when it comes to ethics as everyone's views are different.

If you guys had read properly, my question was also on the legal side. The main question is would we get dragged in if they get into any mishap or unfortunate incident while doing something we ask them to.

Legally could there be ramifications? I can hear it now, "Yes, my husband went to Abeche and died in the desert. I want to sue the TWAT church and for his pain and suffering." Hmmmm, let's see....nope 100% risky free to me.

If we can't extradite a scammer to this country for felony offenses, then how in the heck do you think a scammer's survivors are going to sue Daffy Duck and Reverend Benjamin Dover?

To my knowledge, no scammer has yet been lured to his death by a baiter (not for want of trying on my part though).
What you're talking about here is a hypothetical - it hasn't happened in all the years that baiters have been about that we know of. Therefore, the "death sentence" part of your statement isn't really relevant. Wink

Maybe if someone comes up and says "Hey, I just got a lad killed" we can cross that bridge and talk about Capital Punishment. Wink

You'll hear this time and time again in this sort of thread and it really is the best advice - "If you're not comfortable, don't do it".

Criticise others for trying to do it though and you're opening a can of worms. Everyone has a differing opinion on how far they should push things. That's probably why any Ethics thread doesn't seem to last long around here.

As to the ethical side, I believe that if someone gets hurt or killed while attempting to commit a crime deserves whatever befalls him.

If a lad tells you to go somewhere, you can go, which might be dangerous, or not go, which might make your character and your story less plausible. I hope you would choose safety and not go. I'd say the same things apply to safe scamming that apply to safe baiting.

I honestly have no interest what becomes of a scammer once he's hooked. It's nothing but greed masked by stupidity once they start spending huge amounts of money on travel, music videos and cafe expenses. Nothing in life is certain, all that a baiter does is delay his greed and hopefully put the lad into a position of not inflicting damage onto the innocent. If this involves bankruptcy, humiliation, injury or death, the blame falls onto the lad and nobody else. Would a lad feel remorse for a victim that got into a car accident on the way to the WU? I seriously doubt it...

Yes, he would, but only because it would mean he'd lose a payment. Now if the victim got killed after making the transfer, that wouldn't be an issue (as long as he gets the MTCN first).

Shiver once did a fantastic bait in which he was talking to the lad on his cell phone and got run over just as he was approaching WU. The lad heard the whole thing, thanks to some clever sound effects and lots of screaming. Laughing

I don't think baiting a lad into a dangerous situation can be compared in any way to a death sentence. The lads have a choice to not go. I'm pretty certain that death row inmates don't have any choices left. Wink

If a lad goes into a dangerous situation in his attempt to steal, it's not a punishment for previous choices. It's a self induced punishment for current choices.

Edit: It's also not a matter of certain death for the lad.

A couple of coworkers have fallen for fake check scams. We give these scammers the closest thing to justice they will experience, at least in this life.

Scammers have a tough life. We should send them care packages and warnings about baiters so they can go on stealing from people. Ahhhhh

Perhaps we could recreate the Shiver ploy of being run over during a WU trip.

In the new version, the baiter would just have send the WUxfer, and be phoning the Lad to give him the good news (and the MTCN). He is then struck by a runaway van, and collapses to the pavement.

But, as he begins to expire, he tries to give the Lad the MTCN "3....7.. (cough)... 4... aagh, my leg... (cough) (splutter)...."

Would the Lad tell him to take it easy and relax, or would the Lad ask him to hurry up with the damn MTCN before he died?

They don't care what happens to us, so I don't care what happens to them.

And forget all the cr*p about "descending to their level" -- that's just mealy-mouthed apology for the scammers' crimes. Mad

Having said that, the rule is simple: If a baiting action would make you uncomfortable, don't do it.
