I bought a net book about three months ago, I love the net book - great for remote admin using terminal services to my desktop etc, one thing I absolutely hate is the touch pad. I have been through two Bluetooth mice trying to find one small enough to carry around yet not to small that I cant use it properly.
Today my Microsoft Arc arrived. So far I love it. Folds up for portability yet flips out to almost full size.

Well, I looked it up, and I'd be sold if it were Bluetooth... but it isn't.
Why doesn't anyone make a decent bluetooth mouse at a non-ridiculous price?  |

Nice. I also went through numerous mice until I found 'the one'. I got it with my first mac and have been in love with it since. It is the Apple Mighty Mouse. Although it is a pretty shit mouse when it comes to connection and dust under the scroll ball. |

Trackballs, man. I usually scavenge mice and keyboards from old computers (for some reason my keyboards have unusually short lives - why don't they like coffee again?) but once I found my Logitech "Trackman Wheel" mouse I fell in love.

^I have two of those lying around somehwere here... Don't make even a small dent in the ball, or it'll get stuck on that every 10 seconds and you can throw it out... I prefer my MX 1000, only bad thing is that it's cordless and the battery always runs out at the most inconvenient times.

Microsoft Mouse 6000 - if you push the little button by the left "click" button, it magnifies a portion of the screen around the cursor. It's great! |

I had a half decent Microsoft 5 button + wheel rat, but one day it got rabies and started to work on it's own... he was all around the screen clicking everything with all 5 buttons... I had to put him to sleep.
Then I downgraded to this old chap.
Except mine has blue eyes... I replaced it's boring red LED with a bright blue one. Looks cool in dark  |

Side buttons are handy, I can't deny this - but my issue is that I seem to always hit them by accident! Cordless mice are also convenient, especially for delivering speeches. (hold it in your hand, clicking to cycle through Powerpoint slides like a pro!)
Cheap mice are nice, if only because they can break and you don't feel bad. |

My previous rodent had thumb buttons too, but not so conveniently placed as the Trust. Twas an A4Tech WOP 49Z, crazy mouse with 2 scroll wheels.
For my old gaming peecees, I use some PS/2 Logitech, PS/2 and serial A4Tech.
Old Logitech ball mouse are deathless if properly taken care of, and A4Tech, despite being low priced are of excellent quality.
Hell yea, my 20+ years old Amiga and Atari rats still work. |

Hmm... Make yourself confortable on the couch and just relax.
Now I understand where your fear of balls came from.
Cleaning rodent balls is easy. Water, soap and lint-free cloth.
The tiny rollers inside the mouse are the real buggers. Hard to clean them properly w/o taking apart the mouse. The pressure roller is even worse.
Always used wood toothpicks for this. Matches too. |

The rollers really are the pain to clean, but it can be done... the true horror comes from the little wheel that is used to push the ball towards the rollers. I's springy and whenever you touch it it just retracts and is gone...
