Originally I thought it was legit, but for some reason, most Craigslist car scammers quote what looks like Wikipedia at the end of their posts.

I think I've got him pegged down in California...

Anyone else getting US IP's?

Also, is there a specific direction we should take this? Or just general suffering for him?

I traced the IP and it went to an AOL IP in Kansas.

If this guy really is in the US, it might be worth trying to try to pay "in person" in QC.

It should be noted, that yahoo sometimes re-route emails around there network for some sort of reason unknown to us lesser mortals. I got an email from Kansas as well.

The IP I got traces to AOL though.. which is not owned by Yahoo, nor operates Satellite internet (as far as I know)

I'm going to keep mailing him and see if the IP stays in Kansas.

I'm getting the same thing with this guy, IP addresses in the states. So far I have been asking non-stop questions about the car. Trying to feel him out on his knowledge.

It not unusual to ask lots of questions when buying a car. I work with cars and you will get people asking stupid detailed questions about the cars, to the point where you get sick of it but figure "hey I'll get paid after dealing with this bs". If your selling a car expect A LOT of questions from potential "buyers" Wink

I still think he may be in California, though I couldn't confidently say he's in the Bay Area (You said SF, right?). I got a Victorville IP, that's like an 8 hour drive, right? Then again, my IP is sometimes from a town 4 hours away.

So far I've only gotten one Kansas IP, but two Victorvilles and now a Rocklin (Which is much closer to San Fran)

IP resolves to an AT&T connection in Fremont, California.

Nevermind; I just googled the IP and, as I had some suspicion, nearly all of the results apparently relate to the IP being used as a proxy.

Given that the IP seems to be moving all over the place, but staying in the US, my suspicion right now is that this scammer may be located in the U.S. and using proxies to cover tracks.

My goal now is just to go with this guy's script, and see how he wants the payment to be made. Or, more importantly, where.

In my experience, I have seen that most car scammers are American, based on their knowledge of cars sold here that African lads do not have and are too lazy to find out.

I've had a couple of mundane back and forth messages over the past few days and we've decided that shipping the car is the best option... This arrived one hour ago:
Dear Sally,
Well ... first give me your delivery address and your full name or the name of the person who will sign the delivery papers, then I will start the shipping process and you will get the tracking number to be able to track the car daily shipping status. Before the car leaves the shipping company warehouse you must confirm the payment to the shipping company which will act as an escrow service protecting your funds. Your money will be deposited into one savings account and will not be released until the inspection period ends. The inspection period is offered only to comply with the law and to offer you a buyer protection guarantee. In few words you will get a 10 days period for driving tests purposes without any financial obligation. This inspection period is very useful for cars older than 5 years which might have some problems unrevealed by the seller, because you can change your mind regarding the purchase anytime during those 10 days without any additional cost and being fully refunded. The money will be released from the shipping company safe deposit only upon your request and only after the inspection period ends. I tried to explain as accurate as possible how the whole process works. If you have any questions please ask.

Any suggestions on ??? or where to take this next? I was thinking of residing in Hawaii or a way up north in Alaska.
