Mary Travers of Peter Paul and Mary has died at the age of 72. She'd been battling leukemia for several years.

The first gift I bought when my daughter-in-law announced that she was pregnant was a “Puff the Magic Dragon” stuffed toy. Purchased at a Peter, Paul & Mary concert which I attended seven years ago, the week after our family’s announcement. Such an amazing range of audience members – parents with small children, college students, local business people, and contemporaries of mine (“the gray hair brigade”). Almost all of us sang along: “Blowin' in the Wind,” “Lemon Tree,” “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” and “This Land . . . “

What a lovely voice, and what a fierce and uncompromising spirit!

I heard them when I was little and again a few years ago. Its very rare when sounds bring back wonderful memories but PP and M did that for me. Mary Travers was an amazing person. Bone marrow transplant is really, really bad and I heard that she took it and never complained.

Sad news for anyone of the Boomer generation. Sad

PP&M were part of the fabric of my life when I was in high school and especially my college years, during the height of the Vietnam War protests. I got to meet all 3 of them at a concert in Kansas City in 1970. Someone in our little group suggested we hang around a bit after the concert ended. Sure enough, after 20 minutes or so Peter, Paul and Mary all came out to greet the 30 or so hardcore fans still waiting. I was amazed at how gracious, warm, and open they were with us, and how deeply engaged they were in political conversations with each of us (of course the fact that we were all college students who agreed with their views certainly helped).

I still have a copy of the program of that show with all their autographs. I'm going to go hunt for that on the shelf right now, and put on Album 1700. Excuse me while I shed a tear or two.
