Our Amana washer and dryer shit the bed after a pitiful 5 years of service. I just replaced them with the Whirpool "Duet" front loading combo. I usually don't get excited about appliances, but this washer is awesome.

The spin cycle sounds like a frickin' DC-10 winding up for takeoff. I did some research and found that it spins at 1200 rpm.

Any other Duet owners out there? Should we form a club? Do I need help?

I know this whole Favre thing affected you deeply PF, but now I'm really concerned. Just how many hours have you been spending watching your clothes go around and around and around?

1200 RPM's! That's tackin' it up! Any neighborhood cat that survived the spin cycle would definitely stay off your property!

I went with the Whirlpool Cabrio line in the Washer&Dryer.

Just make sure you leave the door to the washer OPEN when not in use. Do the google and check "mold/mildew and front load washers". BTW I think that Whirlpool is involved in a lawsuit over them because of the mold/mildew issue.

That's why I went with the Cabrio line. It's a top loader with more capacity than the frontloader, spins the same and is HE as well.

Our old Amana's gave up the ghost after 8 years. And with 3 kids we do A LOT of laundry. About 8-10 loads a week. With the new washer/dryer we do a few less loads, but our water bill is 1/2 of what it was!

I was going to scoff at this thread, I thought it might be inapropriate for men to talk about appliances.

I reviewed the official man rules and because PF mentioned RPM's and DC-10 in his opening post this thread is therefore determined to be 'manly'.

now if he'd have mentioned beer it would rate similar to a manly discussion of hunting, chuck norris, Ted Nugent's political views or which action figure is the toughest MF'r.

1200 RPM's that friggin rocks dude.

After watching my parents go through two Maytag Neptunes I bought a LG front loader four years ago. Our Maytag toploader did at least one load a day for 21 years but I did not want the same problems. I run a whites only load with bleach on the door locked sanitize/steam temperature setting at least once a week to kill odors. The LG does amazing things but at 1000 RPM, I'm suffering from RPM envy.

In the UK front loading machines are the norm

I have a Zanussi Jetsystem. Top speed 1400rpm but it can be set to 900, 700 and 500 for more delicate materials.
My pride and joy at present is the 7kg load Hotpoint Aquarius condensing tumble dryer, no more opening the window to put the vent hose out, yay!

I do still line dry the washing as often as I can, very eco friendly and nothing beats fresh sheets that have had a "guid blaw"

I do leave the washing machine door open as well as the drawer to prevent mould. (Its not in the kitchen so the open door isnt an issue )

Most manufacturers recommend a " maintenance " wash once a month when you run the machine on highest temp empty. ( seems we are not killing off all the bacteria at eco low temperatures )
Another thing to try is half a cup of white vinegar in a high temperature empty wash

^^^Whooow Nanny! I feel like I just got off a motorbike after a long ride in the rain. Do you have to call the tower for clearance for take-off during the spin cycle?

After the start of this thread, a lad ASEM'ed me about his order. I told him we only sold one model of washing machine. I should have opted for the 2500 RPM version.

I prefer front-loaders because I don't have to stand up, hang on to the machine, and bend down to fish the wash out one-handed. The washer/dryer in our new apartment is a top-loader with the dryer stacked on top of it. But it is in the apartment, not in a public laundry room down the hall or in another building. Very Happy

I noticed the wife had unchained herself from the kitchen sink replaced our washer dryer with a newer model and gone back to her chained-up drudgery. Cool

I ask no questions about spin speeds or eco-friendliness .... (like hell I don't!) ... It's a Hotpoint with a 1,400 spin speed and is triple A rated so I'm hoping my energy bill goes down a packet.

For the techies amongst you, it's a front loader .... Rolling Eyes

But Nanny, I'm with you on the line drying as much as possible!

I just got that tip from someone else, seems to be working well, no odors as of yet.
