I got this message entitled 'ARE YOU A DEAF MAN' in nice, patronizing capitals. I had five of these in a row. I think it speaks for itself.

I think you're right.. It is probably a love scam. But why would they ask if you're deaf? I have no idea what his point is, but if you decide to bait him, let us know where this goes. Laughing

As for the "smile" I think she/he meant it like a smiley. like some people write hugs or kisses etc..

In the world of the scammers, the word go's around that a lot of people who reply are deaf and can use the phone.....(baiters) Laughing

she just give a reply with pictures, but forgot tho attach them.. seems we hiding to love scam indeed

I've also recieved this email, not sure in how to reply, think i may be the victim of the 7/7 bombing, which has left me not only deaf, but dumb as well, wouldn't it be funny if the lad decided to give us all a phone number to call..

Identifying as Deaf is a very good way for scammers earn the confidence of other Deaf people..... Presenting yourself as someone with some kind of shared experience is a very good way to quickly build up common ground. This is one reason there are "Deaf only" dating sites, and scammers know that targeting them can be profitable. Especially because many Deaf people are hesitant to go to authorities once a scam has been carried out - even more so than many "typical" victims.

The "..smile.." is a commonly used sign-off in TDD/TTY conversations

A "deaf" scammer can also get away with poor written English to a Deaf victim, as level of english literacy (and writing style) can vary drastically even among people who live in an English speaking environment.

Question to other folks replying: did you also identify yourself as deaf? I did not, responding that I had perfect hearing, but certainly sympathized with her plight.
