I don't know if any one here has seen or posted, I am new here.
So this is a different form of a 419 scam, they don't solicite you in the usual way, instead they post an add in the local classified offering a free puppy, you reply and this is what you get:

Welcome minnimowse,

We do see these quite frequently (sometimes it is other exotic animals), and there are a few baiters who love to make the lives of the pet scammers a bit harder. Why not pick up a bait yourself? If you'd like to try your hand at baiting a pet scammer, I would suggest you request a mentor, and in the meantime, search for "bulldog", "yorkie", "unicorn", or "spunky monkey" on this forum and you should be able to find some good baits to learn from.

The fake pet scam is being used alot here (the UK) .

Done by Cameroon and Nigerians offering to "ship" pets . The usey free sites such as gumtree , offering puppies , horses , monkeys , cats , tigers , golden eagles !! to name but a few pets .

I report and get deleted the adds they post on Norwich gumtree but lack the time to report ever add .

The flood the site with so many adds they often make "amusing" mistakes , a beagle puppy for sale with a pic of a husky in the add . KC (kennel club) registered cats , horses and monkeys Laughing .

If im bored i email them for a bit of fun Very Happy

All seem to use a company called Western Union , which does not refund and seems to be a company only used by con artists in africa . The company deserves to be in court for the amount of fraud that has happened via it .

Some of these scams are getting to be rather real looking. At the beginning of the year, there was an advertisement in our local paper for free bulldog. The add didn't seem out of the ordinary. I replied to the email provided (luckily not from my home email) and it was one of these puppy scams.. you know.. the usual... I'm a reverend.. can't keep my loving puppy.. you just pay the s&h.. blah..blah..blah.

I was really surprised as where I live is in a farming community, so when I say it's a local paper.. I mean.. very local. So I've been keeping my eyes open for ads in papers as well to do some baiting.

Anyone else come across this unusual media instead of the typical email?

Western Union and Moneygram are legitimate companies that allow millions of people to send money to friends and relatives in need in emergency situations. They are commonly used by people from impoverished countries who are working abroad and supporting a family at home. They are also a resource for people who legitimately do end up stranded away from home who cannot get access to their money because they do not have ID.

It is a sad fact that the same features that make them a tremendous help to people in need also make them of help to scammers. Ultimately, they are no more responsible for scammers than the relay telephone services intended to assist the hearing impaired, but routinely abused by scammers to hide their African accents.

WU and Moneygram do have lots of posted warnings about scammers. They make it very clear that you should never send money to someone you don't know. In the end, they cannot tell individuals what to do with their own money, and as long as they followed their own posted policies in distributing the money, they (rightly) are not responsible when an individual makes the mistake of sending money to a scammer.

I generally like to compare scammers to bacteria--when we create one drug to fight them, they don't all die--some will survive and mutate into resistant strains, and the new strains are often stronger and resistant to even more drugs. The same would happen if we eliminated companies like WU and MG--some scammers would fail to adapt, but those who did adapt would become even stronger.

SK--there are more ads popping up in papers, because at this point, many local papers allow ads to be created online--making them an easy avenue for scammers.

I got one similar to this. It was a variation where they wanted to charge an additional $100 for two dog beds. Laughing
