This idea of a memory book has come out of my wife's illness.

This primary is for events in the United Kingdom.

But what important events, would you include in a memory book,

Has to be from 1951 upto the present day.

Well, I should think a certain Coronation would be included. Wink

Also, I would include things like Winston Churchill's passing, royal weddings, Maggie Thatcher's election, maybe even the decimalization of the pound.

Wow-where to start.A long time ago,in a galaxy far far away,I was a history major. My point of view is that of an American, but I think for a lot of it,nationality is not an issue.I would be very glad to comment on this, but am way to tired to form a coherent answer right now-
off the top of my head in no order
The fall of the soviet union
the building of the berlin wall
the moon landing
sputnik
the falklands islands war
the rise of microprocessors and the personal computer
cell phones
rock and roll
the war in vietnam
wars for independence/for other means in many countries
star wars
the beatles
the rolling stones
star trek

I will quit now,and go sober up-but this is a very open ended question

I can't pick any particular event during that period which might be of interest or significance to either of you, but wikipedia has published a list for each year.

Here are the end members for your timespan, click to view the corresponding entries.

1951
2009

You'll need to fill in the gaps yourself, just substitute the numerical year for YEAR in the code below:
Code:

1951 - Very good year - I celebrate this one every year. Laughing

1958 - Bad year for Air Travel (Munich - Man United team, and Iowa - Buddy Holly, Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens)

1966 - Obvious really

1968 - Man United won the European Cup (Bobby Charlton hit an absolute screamer from 40 yards)

As I was born in 1957 here goes...

Sport

Football - England winning the 1966 World Cup - and Nobby Styles dancing across the Wembley turf.

Athletics - Roger Bannister's sub-4 minute mile.

Boxing - Henry Cooper knocking down Cassius Clay as he was then.

Cricket - Garfield Sobers knocking off six sixes in a single over at Swansea?

Ice Skating (sport in loosest sense of word) - Torville & Dean's perfect 10 routine.

Downhill skiing - Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards confirming once again that man wasn't meant to fly.

Land speed - Donald Campbell taking off in Bluebird.

Entertainment

Music :

The evolution of British Music from the early 50s crooners through the beat groups like The Beatles, thro' to the present day electronic combos.

British TV and Cinema :

From 'The Lonliness Of The Long Distance Runner' through to the gloss of 'Notting Hill.'

From 'Coronation Street' to 'Hollyoaks.' From 'Hancock's Half Hour' to 'I'm Alan Partridge.'

Radio

From the 'Light Programme' through pirate radio to Radio 1 and beyond into commercial radio.

Royalty

QE II's coronation.
Death of Diana.

Loads of others which I will think of after I have posted this.
