Wait a minute... you aren't even going to have internet in basic training, unless the Army has gone totally soft!

Just remember that everything you do for the first six weeks will be wrong even when you do it right, and keep all contraband in your sock (they never check there).

Also, hide a baggie of foam earplugs, because you will need them to fall asleep when you are bunking up with 50 other idiots who snore, talk, etc. Those earplugs literally saved my sanity. When you get your field gear, then you'll get the rubber ones, but they are hard to sleep with because of the stem.

Congratulations, you will come out of it waaaaay more mature than your peers.

@ all: thank you for your well wishes. T-11 days and counting. Nervous as hell this morning, kind of thinking: What the hell did I just do yesterday?

Anyway, I should change my name to Specialist Cap419kicker. I should make Sergeant in 12-18 months (the beauty of having an education and going into the army).

HOORAH Cap! Even with a nice Rate like that keep your head on a swivel! Do they have WU or MG on bases these days? Make sure you blurt something out in Mugu when the time is right!

Take a small stack of envelopes and stamps. Drop a note to your loved ones on Sunday during your personal time. It does not have to be more that "I'm alive." I can't tell you the entire details, but I was stopped in the parking lot of a big box store 2,500 miles from my home by a Mom who had not heard from her recruit in 7 weeks. We ended up crying together. Don't let that happen.

Memorize your General Orders before you go.

Quote:

1. I will guard everything within the limits of my post and quit my post only when properly relieved.

2. I will obey my special orders and perform all of my duties in a military manner.

3. I will report violations of my special orders, emergencies, and anything not covered in my instructions to the commander of the relief.

Be able to shout them out in 10 seconds at the top of your lungs. Look over the core values and prepare to have them memorized. Start running but don't overdo it. You don't want stress fractures at this point. Try to have fun.

I try to portray a military man in a lot of my baits, but I know that I could never be a soldier as I have very poor self-discipline - which is why I admire those who have that quality, and who are willing to sacrifice their personal freedom to protect that of their nation.
