Pretty real. And yes, we're all familiar with it.

EDIT: You see, very large portions of Nigeria, as well as other parts of West Africa, view the "yahooze" as heroes rather than criminals. They flaunt their wealth (the successful ones, anyway) in the streets and lickle kiddies look up to them as role models. That song was quite a hit. Worst part is, it's not even that good. Confused

EDIT AGAIN: In fact, and I speak under correction, I believe that that song was what lead to baiters' adoption of the term "dolla chop". But I may be mistaken.

Nkem Owoh is a comic actor. The song I Go Chop Your Dollar is taken from the film The Master, in which Nkem played the role of a 419 scammer.

He was arrested in Holland when the police raided a musical show in which he was performing. They arrested 111 people, I imagine they arrested everyone in the building.

Here's a few news articles about him, including multiple awards for acting.

Here's his Wikipedia page which lists 74 films he has appeared in.

And in case you were wondering what the film was about, and how pro-419 it is, here's a quick review from a member that knows as much about Nigerian culture as any non-Nigerian can.

Wait, the movie is PRO 419, but it has a moral to it and that is you do the crime, you do the time? Or was he arrested during filming and they kept it for the film? (BURN)

This guy was a real scammer?

There's so many scammers it's almost like everyone in Nigeria does it, even the celebrities. So it seems to me.

It has no moral to it other than the more maga you get, the better life you live. The arrest has nothing whatsoever to do with the film. The guy was/is a real scammers, and you can tell by the way he always shows off about it. He doesn't need to be subtle since his merciles criminal actions make him a hero.

As for the last paragraph, not everyone in Nigeria is a 419er, but a fair portion of the celebrities are.

Nkem is as much a scammer as John Travolta is a hitman. You've seen Pulp Fiction, right? He's got another one coming out now, where he murders innocent commuters. That Travolta is one sick guy.

thud419: Nkem has time and time again defended the practices of 419 while encouraging the people to do it. Unless he just loves staying in character the entire time, I'm going to go ahead and assume he's dabbled in it before.

Nike, I would really like to see some links that connected Nkem to 419, because I can't find any. If he's as obvious as you say, surely there would be something? I found one unsourced article, that had the police indicting him a year ago. If that had happened then I'd expect to see it elsewhere too. Apart from that I just found loads of stuff like this. "I go chop your Dollar is theme music of a film I did, which was a big misunderstanding. The title of the film is The Master where I played the role of a drug baron. I got a lot of threat. I extracted the theme music because people said the song was nice and everyone is complaining as if I was the head of 419, I will sing such [...] It is the people who feel inferior already. That is an interesting article, straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. I must say, I've not heard him speak like that before. The first page that comes up when you google "nkem owoh 419" has a link to what is probably the same unsourced article you spoke of where the Lagos Police were on him for washy-washy.

I'll definitely dig a bit deeper to find some more sources to post, more for the sake of a debate than for proving my point (since you seem to have shaken my foundations quite a bit). In the meantime, what gets me is this: The papers said that the Dutch Police spent months investigating and planning the arrest. Now, in all fairness, I have no idea how the police work in the Netherlands. But I struggle to believe that months of investigation lead to no evidence, so they went ahead and arrested* over a hundred people for no reason.

* Note: not detained, but arrested.

EDIT: One more thing, I don't mean to nitpick, but my name's "Nick", not "Nike". Just sayin'.

I don't have anything invested in this. I just don't like to see any man accused without evidence.

Nkem was performing in a musical show that the Police raided. It wouldn't be unlikely for them to have arrested every foreigner there, even if they were only after a section of the audience. (Edit: It appears he was not arrested, although his colleague was.)

To be honest if it hadn't been for that song he'd be unknown in the West, so I think the notoriety has been of benefit to him.

Sadly Nigeria is known for oil and 419 scams. One is a natural resource and the other is what a lot of the people do for a living.
