I registered a Mail.com account and signed a few scambaiter guestbooks. They really work. I got three lads within 48 hours. I started to bait one, but then my Mail.com account got locked out somehow.
Then I got this in my regular Yahoo! mail account:

I liked the look of it. Advanced fee fraud that doesn't involve Africa seemed like a fun new direction. Not that I have any old direction being that this is my very first scam bait.
I registered a separate account at Gmail and started from that. My character's name is Lester Digits, but you can call me Les. He's a 19 year old carpenter from Yonkers, NY.
I was thinking about working in a plot line that involved gradually losing fingers, toes, eyes and general maimery in carpentry accidents. But I think maybe that's for a later bait. Right now I'm going with a fairly straight bait. Lester has been asked to remit a payment for courier fees. He actually has three choices based on how fast he wants the money to be received. I chose for him the premium, 24 hour, 850 pound option.
I'm now at the stage of asking obvious questions like "why can't you deduct the fee from my winnings?" and "draw up a contract like I have with my car and my mortgage and varied magazine subscriptions that you can bill me later".
I think my next move will be offering to pay by check, and expression at what the Hell a "pound" is. Lester is a working class American after all, and so young. Such things can be perplexing. (I'm American too, but older and understand concepts like foreign currency.)
There is also an offer on the table that Lester can avoid the fees if he visits the U.K. office of the courier service. That could be decent time wasting / safari fare.
|

Well... Sounds like you're prepared and all. You're certainly baiting safe, but it might be a help to get yourself a mentor.
And speaking of that forumname you chose... well... I'd better keep my mouth shut lest I upset the moderators. Just kidding, no problem |

Welcome,
Yes, read the stickies and have fun. It is probably best not to ask too many questions in the initial stages of the bait - build up gradually as you gain their trust.
I'm willing to bet that this one does originate from West Africa. The +447 phone number though English is just a redirection service - as I say probably to West Africa. As the bait proceeds and the lad goes off script you'll see the English becoming more disjointed and garbled.

I am entertaining the idea of making my typing gradually more mangled to reflect the increased difficulty of typing with fewer fingers, one less eye, and doped up on morphine. I might have to get drunk and tape some clusters of fingers together to complete the effect. |

I wouldn't be surprised if it were based out of Africa too. But what I meant by "advanced fee fraud that doesn't involve Africa" is frauds that don't from the cover story directly mention involvement in Africa, which this clearly doesn't. |

:O
I don't actually care for Muppets nor am I a religious man. I just liked the wordplay. How often does a Spoonerism yield an equally intelligible output?
I usually go by a different name at about 20 other forums.
As for the character name, I got it off Car Talk's staff list. My original bait through Mail.com embroiled Hugh Lewis Dewey from the prestigious Boston area law firm of Dewey, Chetham, and Howe. The Car Talk site is a great source for fake pun names. There are probably about 600 names to be chosen from there. |

That would be possible.. though it would require a list of all eater usernames, and would therefore probably be slow...
EDIT: This was supposed to be a PM about a totally different subject, dunno how it got here... |

Blah.. You know we didn't plan this out... and you also know you don't have a mind.. Remember? We're all bots/alter ego's of the mods....
But seriously, I thought someone was playing a joke on me too when I first saw this... @PoM: I suggest we do a co-bait? To make the confusion even worse...

I'd consent to a name change, if that's possible. I don't know how the board is structured or programmed. |

It sorta looks that way already. In response to my insistence that they pay me my winnings and bill me later:
I am sorry Les, your demand is out of our rules. I am not the law maker here. Try to understand me. |

I wouldn't bother changing the name. Some of the near clashes we get are a lot closer than that.
Go to the Member List and search for "haywood*" (no quotes, but with the asterisk.) |

My lad wants me to send a Western Union payment 850 GBP. Since Lester and I are both Americans, I decided to run that through a currency converter. It comes out to about $1390 USD.
Lester is just a simple working class young man and doesn't understand concepts like Western Union or foreign currency. So Lester "asked his brother", who tells him that 850 GBP is equal to about $2000 USD. Will the lad be kind enough to correct him? |
