I got a scam email today that was dated 11/13/04. Would someone please explain to me how that could happen?

I routinely get mail in my yahoo accounts with a year of 38 on them.Never did quite understand that one.It isn't from just one lad either. |

It's the UNIX millennium bug*. The standard date and time format is the number of seconds since 31st December 1969, kept in a 32-bit signed integer. This means that we will run out of numbers 2,147,483,647 seconds after 31st December 1969, which seems to be 18th January 2038 (give or take the odd day for leap-years).
I imagine the lad hasn't set his clock and his particular OS either miscalculates date zero, or uses an invalid "negative" number (I suspect 2147483648) to show it hasn't been set, and the rest of the OS ignores that and just uses it as if it is a date.

I'd rather expect it to be a crappy set up mail server they use to seed their scam emails, it's not the client that determines the sent date/ time I think?
ETA: you can backdate emails yourself, too.
