Eldest is falling out with her friend so she's moving home.
Fine we have space as her younger sister has moved out.
BUT is she has a house rabbit.
I need to know if a kiddy gate would keep the bunny out of rooms where we have wires etc but let the cat roam ( reckon the cat can jump over a gate )
Anyone out there have a house rabbit? |

Only one found is 18'x 5'.
Why dont you get some plastic mesh and fix it to the kiddy gate with plastic ties from a D.I.Y store. |

or you can hope the cat will kill the rabbit, then you don't have to do anything |

@ Fo'andles
Nice idea as I've already got some of those ties from fixing Xmas wreaths to door .
I've had many a pet before but never a house rabbit.
I believe they can be destructive
House trained but destructive
My 2 faves were rats called Suggs and Non Suggs.
Suggs lived on my shoulder for most of the day even staying there when
I went to hang out washing etc .
Scared our postie.
As the packages were being handed over Suggs would run down my arm to sniff them out
Postie freaked.
Think he'd have got used to it by thw 2nd or 3rd time!
Daughter 1 is also coming home with a rat ( apart from the one she's living with ) |

@ KOKOT hoping to try and avoid that
Cat has been scared of rabbit when it visited so not sure who'd pounce on who
The rabbit doesnt know its a rabbit, Daughter 1 tried getting another bunny to be pals ( opposite sex ) they nearly kiied each other
I have had one cat that loved being pals with rabbits and another that would kill them given the chance |

I grew up on a vegetable farm, I can attest rabbits can dislocate all their individual atoms and reassemble them on the other side of any fence you care to throw at them. Your best bet is to look for chicken wire (the narrow gauge stuff, not the loose stuff), and make sure it goes right down to the floor. If you are trying to seal an outdoor area, bury the wire to at least 6", or they'll just burrow straight under in a heartbeat. Or turn to atoms and teleport. |

I hink the cats got dibbs on the teleport
Its really for inside the house.
Psychobunny has never lived outside
The cat is used to going everywhere in the house and getting onto window ledges,
I know the cat can survive a fall from my room indow ( 3 TIMES ) but doubt rabbit would.
maybe confining him to 1 room maybe right.
I plan to set up an outside pen in the hope it'll cut down on lawnmower time but mostly supervised |

We have 2 rabbits that live outside and they do not cut down the time by eating the grass, still got to get the lawnmower out tomorrow.
Might need a rabbit harness on a long lead |

I keep a rabbit in my garden, a single that would love some company. If you like I could set up something for them to meet. It's only 6 feet down. |

I grew up with bunnies, and remember well the rabbit fights that can ensue. If there are to be more than one around, they pretty much had to be with each other from the start of life or territorial instincts would kick in and they'd try to kill each other, even siblings. I second the chicken wire, anything with holes over 1" they seemed to get through. |

We had a little cutie in the house until last year. Its amazing how something so sweet looking can be so destructive to wires and never learn. Its total tally was 47 wires and optical lines. I kept them on a hook in the garage. I remember when half its little face was black from the electrical short it set off yet it bit another power cord the next day. My little girl once complained that her computer mouse did not function. I explained that her bunny turned it into a wireless mouse.
"Chicken wire" works outside with a wood frame but does not look very good and does not hold its shape. I would suggest "wire mesh" or to reinforce over a framework, "building cloth". If outdoors, use galvanized or stainless steel. If its indoors use either stainless or painted steel.
I set up a movable pen outdoors for it. Don't expect it to trim the lawn. It actually did not like lawn grass to eat. My pen had a perimeter of 50 feet and it was almost too small. The rabbit would normally just sit, but once in a while would run the perimeter and of course do the bunny binky! |

I don't have a house bunny myself, but my friends who do have successfully used baby gates for years, just not the traditional wood or mesh which is spaced to wide or is easily chewed through.
One friend had a hard plastic one that was almost solid plastic but had holes about an inch in diameter--it was pretty hard and thick, a bit too much for bunny to chew through in one sitting. They also put lots of toys out to keep bunny busy and put the wires in bunny's room inside some pvc tubing for safety.
A quick google to see what is out there today showed this newer plastic version, which looks like it might work.
http://www.babyage.com/the_first_years/11616/small/the_first_years_all_clear_swing_gate.htm
My experience with wild rabbits is that they will go through/over/around almost anything to raid the garden, but the well fed domestic rabbits my friends own just don't seem to have as much drive. |

@ Dorothy
That looks just the job
Sadly they dont ship to the UK
It seems the only gates available round here are the bar type
I've been to Ikea <shudder. and bought aload of the cable tidy stuff in the hope it'll slow him down when it comes to wires
To begin with pschobunny will just have to be locked in one room when we're out |

Some of you people are soooooooo cruel.
God included the little puffy tail on bunnies for just this problem. To keep them in the correct room simple staple the tails to the floor. Foolproof |

Make sure if you put up a fence outside, bury it 6" underground.
Also, guage the size of the smallest point on the rabbit's skull...and make sure any hole in your barrier is smaller than that. They WILL go through.
The child safety gates should work, provided the gaps are small enough. And it's not one of those monster rabbits that weigh like 20 lbs.
Also, inform the less educated (Children, oblivious idiots), that the little perfectly round brown balls that may occasionally appear on the floor are NOT chocolate. |

^^^ They didn't do me any harm. (I was quite young at the time.)
I thought Rabbit Gate was the investigation held when, half an hour before the FA Cup Final, the home cinema reported "No Signal Received" and comprised everyone in the family declaring that they didn't leave the door open. |

I've just emptied and moved my wardrobe, its going to daughter2 who has moved out.
Anyway behind there was the old fireguard that we used to keep the kids away from the coal fire
I think it may useful in keeping psycho bunny confined.
Still not sure when they're moving back |
