^ Those fast trains come out of nowhere. I've been made to jump a couple of times waiting on the platform at Ally Pally stn when one has gone hurtling through. You think you'd hear them coming but you get about a second and a half's warning.

Do signalmen make you repeat important instructions or info to make sure the message was understood?

I know you're talking British trains here, but all the talk about steam trains reminds me of the year I went from San Francisco to Gilroy, CA, on a steam train. (Well, it was a steam engine pulling modern commuter train cars, but there was STEAM!) Very Happy

That puppy could move!

Every time we crossed a road, all the people waiting at the crossing were taking pictures and videos. No doubt many of them were there specifically to watch a steam engine chug past.

It has two purposes, One it wakes you up and two it tells you when you approaching a signal and that ping you heard means good to go, and the long one means station approach/point (Switcher) approach.

Theres a multibeep which is a multiwarning.

having been on a diesel locomotive rail tour with my boyfriend about 2 weeks ago i can tell you this . all of them were standing there to see the steam train go past . steam trains are amazing pieces of engineering . this fomr a person who is a lot more used to diesel !

Interesting thing about steam: since the piston is pushed for the whole stroke instead of just a quick push at the top, when it's going slower it has more power. I imagine that would be great for trains, especially the really heavy freight trains meeting "unexpected" hills.

My other granpaw used to take me up to the bridge to watch the steam trains going by, we'd come back all sooty but happy ( ah the days before colour tv or computers ! )

I keep getting told off for blasting the horn too much though - when is it acceptable to do so?

Also, what's the stopping distance from 125 to 0?

What about estimating when it's time to slow down? In the planes, we have all kinds of Nav aids to help. Does it just take intimate track knowledge in this case?

The stopping distance is upto 2000 metres, that is how far we had to get from the train if it derailed, before putting down detonators, front and rear and if a junction was included, that as well.

That was on the london underground railways.

Your right about the road knowledge for stopping, signals, bridges, buildings the feel of the train, on certain parts the track and the sound it makes, all come second nature to train drivers in reading the road and stopping, when and where required.
