hello all.
im having a problem with a lad/ladess who is insisting that i mail a scan of my passport/ID/ driving licence- is there a way of reasonably faking one (within the law of course), that would keep him happy but at the same time it'll only be a scan that i send him, not an actual document, it will not be possible for him to use it to scam others. all advice welcome

Tell him you will do it, but think of every excuse under the sun.

Scanner broken, power failure. Send him massive random files which you have changed to .jpg status, but he will never be able to read. Say you've sent it when you haven't. Blame the internet host/mail server/virus checker/day of the week.

Under no circumstances send a passport/DL. They can and will use them to scam others.

I can only echo what Cathy said. Any bullshit will do, but avoid sending anything that looks remotely like legible ID to them.

I am glad to read you already understand that sending out anything a lad can reuse is a bad idea. You have been given great advice so far. I will add that you can also ignore ID requests or simply tell the lad you lost your ID. Give him your "ID number" and tell him to use his resources to find your record. This rubs his ego a bit and give you an out Very Happy

thanks, great idea, ive been doing this as a source of amusement for the last 2 years-when i can be bothered- but only recently realised that others are doing it too, and stumbled upon this site by accident, its nice to feel part of a team. thanks again.

With passport just tell them you dont have one, you never needed one.

to make a quick and simple fake file just open notepad and type the following:

(it will make a jpg with a proper icon, but when trying to open it will tell them there is no preview available)

When saving select save AS: change the file type from txt to all files, and select the encoding as UTF-8 save as something like : docs.jpg

it passes muster, because it has the right header of a jpg, so windows will say its a jpg, but it has no content, if you wanted to expand it massive in size just fill the middle with lots of 0's as many as you want. (0's if you want to add them go before

^^ Very slick. Always wondered how you'd do that.

Another quite lengthy modality is:

-get him to send his shit forms, passport scans, banker's draught junk, cheque scans etc.

-tell him you'll scan your documents

- tell him the scaner is b0rk and you will have to do it later

- same again

- say you scanned it but it's on a flash drive and it's still at work

- send the message, finally, with docs.zip attached and return his junk forms to him.

- say you can't find the flash drive. Laughing

Of course they don't want or need your passport pics to mek u fall mugu, so even if you send them junk they will often say thank you very much and proceed to the next script stage.

Never send a lad ANYTHING REMOTELY USEFUL Wink

not even another scammer's passport scan. Don't send them anything they can use for any purpose at all.

I always blow off their requests. I have to admit I do feel tempted at times to give the name and SSN of that felon who sells the "lifelock" memberships on TV. But I don't.

take a copy of any .dll file from your windows directory.
rename it as 'mypassport.jpg'
send it to the lad

i think some of them are just ticking boxes for their masters (ogas) who demand they check the identity of victims.
if you have one of those scammers, he will move on top the next stage.

if he says he can't read the file, demand that he installs new software, checks his system's error log, etc, etc.

but definitely do not send fake id.

I wouldn't be so quick to resort to the popular .dll modality. The reason being that it is popular.

Many lads have been baited before and will be baited again. And unfortunately they are capable of learning. If they receive a file that won't open too many times from people who are not giving them money in the end, I think there is a chance of them making conclusion "corrupted file = joker".

This could, of course, be said about any modality and can't be avoided completely. That's why when I bait, I follow the rule "if you don't have to use modalities, then don't".
Instead I just do what baiters to best: lie, make up excuses, delay, whatever. Most of the lads are more interested in my money than my passport, so they have believed when I have made up yet another excuse for why I don't want to send passport to them.

i think it is fine to try it - if he is scared off, just rebait him from a different address.

any bait that fails at the id-check stage has not got very far, so you aren't risking anything

My only point is, why nail with a sledgehammer when a normal hammer will do just as well. If you can weasel yourself out of difficult requests of lads by lying, there is no need for files. Just as there is no need to spend an evening making a photoshopped forgery of whatever if you don't absolutely need to.

In addition to not wanting to make the lads any smarter to our tactics than necessary, I simply do not see the point. Lying is much easier and has much more room for variations. Plus it leaves doors open both to you and other baiters.

I sent Charles Soludo a mocked-up copy of my junior school cycling proficiency certificate as evidence of my ID - see my siggy line. It worked a treat, and it was not something the lad could really recycle (pardon the pun) without looking completely stupid. Laughing

Kokot, you will find most mail services wont allow you to send an exe (even if you zip it)
it would mean building a fake site, going to a lot of trouble when the ip is in there email anyway, to me its a lot of trouble for very sketchy information.

kokot, most scammer emails seem to use services like yahoo which do not hide the ip address.
so there is no need to use the ihound service and, like d11 says, there is little value if you do.

if you want to trace an ip address, there are already tools that will do that for you.
