I would like to ressurect AVATAR DAY

The first noteable day is this coming weekend. It is ANZAC Day on the 25th. Some of you may have noticed that Yastreb has posted a few poems and both him and I have ANZAC Avatars. If you would like to join in, please change your Avatars on the 24th then return to your original on the 26th.

The obviously noteable dates will be recognised, although I may request something more obvious than a flag.

Whatever the day, be it celebratory or commemorative, participation is not compulsory but the Forum does look quite cool.

If there are any suggestions for an Avatar Day date then please add to the thread although once a month is about enough.

Well, we had Remembrance Day back in November, so for those of us this side of the pond, we should have Memorial Day. Smile

I am joining you to honour the troops that fought in the pacific. We had our colonies in Indonesia and New Guinea and a lot of dutch people died during the war, most of them in the Japanese camps.

To the Dutch members here on eater, we can have our own avatar days on the 4th and 5th of may when we remember the war casualties and celebrate liberation day

That make things tough on me as I had realtives who fought on the losing side of WW I and both sides (Europe) in WW II. It is very strange to posess my Great Uncle's U.S. Purple Heart and Flag from his coffin when he fell in France and my other Great Uncle's NCO dagger and memorial etchings from when he fell at Leningrad.

I will show support for my birth country but hope that all countries are allowed their rememberance of their fallen regardless of the particular wars outcome. We all lost people who valiantly defended the ideals of their individual country and it is that service to their people we should recognize.

Hi Badger,

Nicely put.

I will try and keep it balanced on the Rememberance aspect, but tell me if I miss something. I will hopefully publish a prospective list in a few days.

It should be fun too. 'Talk Like A Pirate Day' goes down especially well with suitably themed Avatars AND all posts for that day in Pirate Speak.

If it's a National day then I may ask for something a little different but never offensive nor disrespectful.

It's just coincidence that the first choice should be ANZAC Day.

[nit-picky intellectual mode]Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day - it celebrates the defeat of the French army at the Battle of Pueblo. It isn't a national holiday in Mexico, but a regional holiday in the State of Pueblo[/nit-picky intellectual mode]

That being said, all the Hispanic population in the area of California where I live celebrate 5/5 with great abandon. Wink
