I am a newbie. I've never baited before, and I think I have a live one.

I recieved an email the other day from Cote Ivoire, from some poor girl in distress looking for someone to invest her 4.2 million dollar inheritance. I told her I would sink it into my business (I deliver boat equipment in my pickuptruck as a way to make extra cash on the side,) but that the kickback she was offering wasn't enough. I pushed for 20% rather than the 15% she had originally offered.

She replied to my counter with what looks like a generic email, but included a phone number at the bottom and a plea to contact her right away. She has not agreed to my higher offer. Today I am introducing my business partner "Chris" to her. If someone would like to step in as "Chris" I'd be glad to hand over the case. I don't know if I'm up to the whole scambaiting thing. I don't even know how to wash my IP address of an email, and I don't want to get tied up in stuff I can't handle.

Any takers?

no need to pass your lad, you'll find that many of us play multiple characters.

my suggestion is to go for it. One way to improve your baiting skills is to bait them.

remember, you are only limited by your imagination.

have fun

oops, edited to add. ignore her telephone call request.

Welcome Prospector,

As MG said, what you received is a run of the mill scam invite, so feel free to play with the lad. However, importantly, you should not respond from your personal/work email address.

If you want some personal assistance, sign up for a mentor.

You may also find some helpful hints at our Eater University.

Good luck.

Build your bait one day at a time. Ask questions. But, keep your questions to one per email per day. You don't want to overload them.

If there's something they say that you don't understand, throw it back at them and ask them what they meant. Even if you do understand them, you need to make sure. Throw it back at them and ask them what they meant.

If they give you a form to fill out and send to the bank, fill it out. But first send the form back to the lad to ask him if you filled it out correctly. If you send them a form where you made a mistake (which wasn't "deliberate" of course) then you'll need to have him look at it again to ask him if it's right.

Get them off topic. Ask them about what life is like in Africa. Ask them if they ever heard of Bugs Bunny or Star Trek or the Boonie Goonies.

And as mewing_ghecko said, ignore their telephone request. You can also sign up for a K7 number (www.k7.net) and give them that. But don't give them that at first. Tell them that your phone number is at the end of your letter, but forget to include.

I think you get the idea that the goal here is to string them along, build them up, get them on the hook, and to string them along some more.

Bait safe, read the stickies, and most important thing of all....

Welcome to the Eater! Very Happy

Should I be concerned about my IP being traceable?

Here is the latest on my bait...

Her last response looked like this:

Dear Dave Cartego

I have received your email. Please i pray that you find a place in your heart to assist me not necessary because of what you will gain from this my inheritance but what awaits you from God almighty.in my life before now, i have never begged or talk more of asking assistance from someone i never known before but, situation and condition has left me with no choice since the death of my beloved father and right now my life is not safe here any longer that is why i am desparate to move out from here as soon as my inheritance is release to you on my behalf. i will be 19 years on the 22 november and why i contacted you is because the bank advised me that i can only have direct access to this money at this my age through a guardian who they are going to release this money to directly or that i should wait until i am 25years of age which is in the agreement the signed with my father at the time of deposit but i don't know what will be my faith of surviving at this present situation of this country that i am into now since i am afriad of the problems going on here which every day innocent people are been killed and dropped in the streets and my uncles who have taken all the properties and treating to kill me.I was about going into the university before my father died and since his death i have pass through alot of wickedness in the hands of my uncles who are my late father's younger brothers.

Please my greatest happiness is that the bank officer in charge of my late father's acount promised me that he will try all his best to see that my inheritance is release to the guardian that i will present that is why i am on my kneels begging you to accept to be my guardian so that my inheritance be transfer out from here .I contacted you to be my Guardian so that you will look after me and help me to invest this money well in a good business when the bank release it to you. I have suffered a lot since the death of my parents, but I have some heartless and wicked relations as uncles who want to kill me because i asked why they should sell all the propeties he left for me that was why i needed your help to have this my inheritance transfer out from here immediately since they know nothing about this money which i was warned by my father before his death never to disclose to them about it .

Please you will also help me to move out from here as soon as you receive my inheritance in your account ,that is why I don't want to have the money invested here or to live here any more. For now I do not consider any relatives, so I do not have. Please i will like to know if you have accepted to stand as my guardian so that i can take your information to the bank to present it to them as my guardian that i want my inheritance to be release to on my behalf. I will be hoping to hear from you soon so that i can know what next to do.I will be happy to have your telephone number so that i can call you or you can call me on this number 00 XXX XXXXXXXX.

regards

Miss Cindy abami

And i sent her this reply today...

Quote:

Cindy, I need to be frank with you, my partner, Chris is very uncomfortable with this deal, although I have pointed out to him that you cash infusion comes at a time when we desperately need to upgrade our fleet. Without a commitment from you of the terms I outlined above (20% of the capital and 15% of dividends), I am not sure that he will entertain your offer.

Once I see that you are sincere in working with us, and willing to commit to the 20%, 15% arrangement above, I will contact you.

The way I see it, this is a win-win situation. We need the cash to make our business stronger, and you need us to get the money into Canada.

The death of your father is most unfortunate. My heart really goes out to you being orphaned at such a tender age, if I could care for you myself I would. I imagine you are a beautiful and smart young woman. I would love to see a phot of you, that might also help Chris feel assured of your pure motives to move this money. You deserve your inheritance, and the people there must be very wicked to keep it from you.

If you are sincere about this transaction, pleae let me know today that you agree with the 20%/15% sharing I outlined above, and send me a picture of yourself.

God Bless you Cindy, I know there is pureness in your heart.

Dave Carteg0

I told her I had a business moving yachts (I actually do have a business moving boat parts as an "on the side" venture involving one pickuptruck and a flatbed trailer). In these emails that business has a fleet of rigs that need rebuilding, which is where her money will be invested.

A mentor may be a good idea. I'll head over there.

You'll find that lads are very reluctant to offer you a higher percentage, and nobody here knows why.
It's as if on some level, they do believe it's a genuine transaction.

^^^^ If you've been with a bait long enough, you might be able to get away with demanding a higher "cut".

Either way, it's a good delaying tactic right when you're about to visit the WU office.

After realizing that my real name was on the sig of the gmail I was using, I wrote to C1ndy as my other character telling her to stop all contact with "Dave"

She wrote back to Dave, begging him to help and asking if she can work with him without "Chris" interfering.

I have made a new gmail account (without any sig's etc.) Is it safe to lead her to that account and keep up the game, or should I drop the whole thing now that I've realized this stupid mistake?

ETA - Cindy feels very close to me, I am now "Uncle Dave" I feel the endearment.

You should probably drop this bait and then rebait the same lad from a new account with a totally unrelated story (though demanding a higher cut is always good.)

So my lad started out with an MSN email account, but once I replied, they switched to a hotmail.

Do they sort the potential payees into a new account, or do they just have to jump a lot to avoid getting shut down as spammers?

Also post-switch, the grammer seems to have gotten better, although it may just be in my head. I'm wondering if they pass off the sucker from a "harvester" to a "case worker" or similar. Are they that sophisticated?

I'll let this one die off, and rebait.

Not especially, no. Probably not even a little bit.

Those are things that you should pay attention to. Your real name gives away more about you then your IP address. Many people worry too much about the silly IP thing and forget about everything else.

I'm glad you pointed this out Smile

Edit: and believe me the lad has already forgotten your name Wink
